Title: big puff of smoke
Post by: bullzeye on 27 June 2012, 10:12
Hi guys, well having owned my car well over 12 month i havent once seen smoke coming from it,untill today

started her up this morn to take kids to school, when kids shouted dad where on fire, looked around and it was chuckin blue smoke out, i revved the car abit and it just got thicker, anyways after 30 secs or so it stopped. and it was clear

anyone know what would cause this? like i said it was soon as i started the car the smoke was there

Turbo seals, valve stem seals or piston rings are the obvious ones.

Strange how its only happened once though. Does it burn any oil?

doesent burn oil usually but i did drive through floodwater, last week which made changin gears abit hard, but thats sorted it self out.

i was thinkin it might be something to do with that but this was last week and the smoke appeared today, doesent seem to be smoking now, just been out started her up and nothing at all.

blue is obviously oil from somewhere....

Mine if its been stood a while (week or so) throws a white cloud when first started but then goes.
When did you last fire it up?

Valve stem seals would be the first thing to test. (leak down test)

A piston ring and turbo seal wouldn't get better when it's warm.

I had a similar problem, it gradually got worst, everytime i started it up it decided to send up smoke signals and then it started wouldnt engage the ignition properly so had a job getting started, took a few attempts to get going.

i eventually traced it back to the headunit that was from Hong Kong = Xtrons =

removed the unit, put the old gamma unit in, took to a mate n cleared error codes n now starts first time all the time and all smoke is gone, may be worthwhile checking electronics, the way my mate put it was the headunit was sucking all the power from the car and so i would have problems with initial start up.

he showed me that when he turned the ignition so that all your dash light light up, waited about 5 secs then started the engine, started first time.

then again my smoke smelled like petrol  :undecided:

worst it would have done would be permanently live, causing a battery drain
