My GTD went back to the VW dealer today for its first service and I had the pleasure of driving one of their courtesy cars for the day - an Audi A1 1.6 diesel and not the usual base model Polo. It could've been either, as the dealer also has an Audi franchise on the same site. Although the A1 was OK, it's certainly no looker, and in spite of Audi's premium image, I think the Golf's interior is a nicer place to be than the Audi's. It made me realise how much I enjoy my own car, and I was glad to get it back.
After almost a year with my GTD, I must say that I've been very happy with it and not had any real issues, other than the occasional piece of creaking trim - I can live with that as it is only very occasional, and I don't want the dealer dismantling the trim and making things worse. Of the 3 Golfs I've owned (a mk4 diesel GTI and a mk5 diesel GT 170), the GTD is my favourite.
Oh, and I gave the dealer strict instructions not to wash my car - I didn't want the resident trainee grease monkey let loose on my car to inflict the heavy swirl treatment on my paintwork!

And this is the same instructions I will be giving my dealer come service time, don't want them putting there crapy chemicals on my nicely waxed pride and joy!
Good here yours has been great and hope it continues to keep you grinning....
Did you take out a service plan? and was it honoured...

I told them to leave it the fcuk alone when it first arrived from factory. It was in the showroom when I picked it up, everyone, including the sales manager, was giving me funny looks, that said it was absolutely filthy and covered in stickers

It's not just the chemicals they use that you need to worry about pal, it's also the sponge that's been dropped on the ground, that's then rubbed over your paintwork (and everyone else's), followed by the dirty, gritty leather that'll be used to dry your pride and joy. You can bet they don't use a clean woolly mitt, 2 bucket method and a fresh, clean drying towel for each customer's car.
As well as telling the guy on the service desk that I didn't want my car washed, I also stuck a note on the dash in case the message didn't get through to the workshop. Seems to have worked. OCD? Maybe, but like you Mr GTD, I'd put a lot of time and effort into my car 2-3 weeks ago, claying, polishing, glazing and waxing, and the last thing I wanted was for the YTS guy undoing all the hard work.
Yes, I did take the 3 year service plan, so nothing to pay today! That was a nice feeling.

I also leave a note on my dash, and one in the passenger footwell, just incase someone moves the one on the dash. Definitely OCD! I always park it right at the far end of the car park at the dealership, where there's a space and a 1/2 and it's always in that spot when I come to collect.

I'm with you Scott on the whole parking thing. Can't understand why people squeeze into the smallest of spaces - just asking for trouble. Me? - I park as far away from everyone else as I can.

+1, you have to as there is no side protection on the MK6

We were at the OK Dinner the other day, the car park was only half full, so I parked in the far corner, not in the end space as this would have meant opening the doors into a bush, but in the next one, right on the line meaning no one with any sense would try to squeeze between me and the bush.
Just as we were walking in, another car came into the car park. No prizes for guessing which space he aimed for. Needless to say, I was back there and moved my car into a now vacant space next to a disabled bay.

Tossers!
I've been known to just drive home before if a car park is too full

Defo not OCD, but we're simply looking after our valuable property.
After receiving keying of 2 feet (!!) in a supposedly secure car park only 8 months after receiving my GiT, I have been even more vigilant and aware of parking surroundings. Where possible I take the wife's smaller Polo !!!

Apart from supermarket car parks, I hate using airport car parks. You can park in what looks like a fairly low risk space, away from other cars when you arrive, but there can be lots of comings and goings of other cars / inconsiderate parkers while you're away, and people squeezing past your car with large suitcases and bags, increasing the risk of damage.
I had my previous car damaged at Stansted airport by some T0$$€R opening their door onto my car and leaving me with a nice ding in the door. I know a ding can be easily repaired, but it really p!$$€d me off at the time, as it was the only damage on an otherwise unblemished car in nearly 4 years.
Whenever possible, I now try and arrange a lift to airports to avoid having to leave my car in the danger zone!

I've never, ever parked at an airport and never will.

It makes no economic sense, but it's good to have an old car for car parks, shops, unmade roads, driving to work, taking the kids to wherever club they're going to, winter etc. That's why I still have my 8 year old Passat. It's great for the daily grind and means I never have to drive the Golfs unless I really want to. It does beg the question, why do I have the Golfs?

On my last car I had alarm fitted with a warn away, " please step back" it detected peeps, objects ect ect...and it seemed to work a treat...had no supermarket dents ect...

I'd be worried that would tempt people.. or children.. to try it even more. I probably would if I went to get into my car and the one next to me told me to step away. I'd try it a few more times lol

Don't know how that would stop some nugget pranging your door with theirs though in a car park!?
I agree with dubber re another car. I bought an old Skoda for £300 purely because we were flying from Edinburgh airport (I'm from Glasgow) and there was no way I was leaving the Golf in a car park for 2 weeks.
It was one of the best purchases I ever made. 12 months MOT 6 months tax. Sold it back on Gumtree for £200 a year later with only a couple of days MOT left!!
It was great for the winter and the weekly shopping although I still found myself parking it in end / isolated spaces away from other cars. Old habits and all that
I couldn't leave the Golf in any car park apart from Costco who have door friendly sized spaces.
