Title: Panel filters
Post by: Ginge 35Edition on 26 June 2012, 21:31
Are they any good and can anyone recommend one? What is the benefit and what should I expect? Or do I save my money and go down the intake/ induction kit? Thanks Neil.

Had a feeling that this might be the response I'd get. I know how to clean cars but anything technical I'm a complete rookie. Thanks.

The general view is that they aren't worth it. I've asked on the tuning section for someone with a rolling road to perform a test before and after BHP numbers and oddly everyone with a rolling road declined.

On paper they do make an improvement but I guess you shouldn't bliss everything you read....

Problem with induction kits is they're just so damn in your face you can't really get away with not declaring them to your insurance, and when your insurer doesn't like mods, well, that's never gonna really work is it lol

Read somewhere the other day that panel filters can do more harm than good.

I've got an ITG which is a multi layer foam. Made 286bhp on a revo map setting 2 but i haven't got a comparison to not having it in with the map.
Looking at the oem filter a brick would be less restrictive. Same filter that's in a mk5 1.9 tdi !!

Certainly on the older MK4's etc anything remotely oil based had a negative impact on the MAF

Is it safe to fit a full intake kit without a remap as my understanding is it gives you a touch more noise, the standard GTi is far too quiet for my liking and not planning to remap until new year?

yes its safe but you won't gain much really without a remap. maybe a couple of bhp but its which more boost the engine is needing more air.

Panel filters do allow more air through as they are less restrictive, I had an ITG panel filter on the clio and I didnt think that was too bad in relation to the oil they use on it.

What kind of induction kit are any good though, seen a carbon Pipercross one on Ebay, the only thing I dont like about induction kits is that I think a lot of the time they give out far too much noise and dont do anything in relation to performance.

thats a popular one. a few members on here have that fitted.

i had an ITG intake and though it made more power i didn't like the noise it made so took it off.

if i decide to try another one it will be this one i think

If your gonna start adding inductions, exhausts ect ect...my understanding is its best to add these mods first then remap..

if your going for a custom remap your right but with an 'off the peg' map like bluefin etc it prob won't make much difference.

also if you do make any changes just call super chips and they alter the map for you. i had mine tweaked to my liking better
