Right, mk3 gti 8 valve, driving along as normal, suddenly engine just lose throttle, checked throttle cable hasn't broke, it still turns over, awaiting petrol now, but the gauge says im just inside the red, any ideas guys?

It's not petrol

It could be petrol, gauge often over reads. Alternatively, put the sails out to get home. :lipsrsealed:
Did it splutter to a standstill? Usually if you run out of fuel, you will get a bit of a splutter at the end whilst its sucking up the last of it. Otherwise, can you hear your fuel pump priming? Fuel pump or more likely just the relay, coil, crank sensor.............., could be a few different things, but first you need to check if your getting fuel and/or spark.

We put petrol in it, still didn't start :(
The lovely AA man came out, no spark, cleaned up my rotor arm and contacts, still didn't start, went to check for a spark from the coil, and kindly broke my king lead at the distriutor contact, he said it could have been that, but doubt it, so im off to get new HT leads and a new coil..
Any other ideas??

Cam/crank sensor would be a start....

New coil and king lead, job done :)
