Tried removing my ignition barrel today,to replace , two new key as the one I had looked about to die. removed cowling cover to discover someone had been there before(what a surprise)there were several holes drilled where one should be tried what is said to know avail.much banging and tugging later the key will not turn plus the steering lock is now on .I can buy a new steering lock housing but how do you remove it? thanks for any help, was hoping to go on a rally sat but may have to take me mk5

You tried moving the steering wheel and turning the key to unlock it? Some people overlook this.
Those holes in the ignition barrel might be from the replacement of the barrel in the past. You just drivee a small hole in the barrel and press in the clip..barel pops right out.

If I remember correctly you need to remove the splined adaptor on the steering column to remove the barel housing. You might be better off/easier to take the whole column out buy unbolting the universal joint near the pedals. Should pop right out with a few other bits removed.

tried what is said about the holes didnt slip out next try a bit more then remove the steering colum

Iirc, key should be in the ignition, and switched to ACC, and a drill bit or the like, pushed into the appropriate hole, to release the pawl, before it will come out.... but its been a VERY long time!

After messing about and banging aggressively, the key will no longer turn even with the wheel being moved.Think a big drill will come out and drill the barrel, if that will work!!

Sounds like the only option maybe to replace the inner column...
2 bolts and smack it with a rubber mallet to take it out...
If you need a replacement one I have a few knocking around in the garage...
