Title: Coding an ECU
Post by: Mr_Ed_35 on 25 June 2012, 15:45
Hi all,

Just a quick question.  On a Mk6 GTI ED35 Is it true that, once fitted, an ECU is coded to that specific vehicle and cannot be transferred to another for testing purposes etc?

Thanks

It's been like that since the Mk3...you need to re-code the ECU to the immobiliser (and probably other controllers too) and that's not an easy task on the current cars.

Yes, as far as I'm aware.  I think the only way to do it is to de-transponder the ECU with specialist equipment and I very much doubt whether a VW garage would/could do that.

unless you have the kit and knowledge to do it all yourself it'll be cheaper just to get yours remapped.. which is i'm guessing what these "testing purposes" are

Your Body Control module is also VIN specific.

I don't think the BCM is VIN specific as I have replaced mine and sold mine on to someone else with no issues.

You could have a second ecu for your car yes.

Not cheap though.

he's having problems with his car and it's been in VW for quite a long time, so I would assume he's double checking the truthfulness of what they're saying

Hope the car is fixed soon David

Spot on Scott! I'm actually relieved that what the dealer told me is correct. I'd suggested to them that maybe they could take an ECU out of another ED35 to either eliminate that possibility that mine was faulty or confirm it as the problem, but they said they couldn't do that for the reasons in my OP. Yes, I hope my car is fixed soon too cos I've only given them till the end of this week.

For you guys not familiar with the story so far: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=232177.0

'KIN hell, the dealer won't be able to what I can do, they'd need to put a virgin ECU on and code it to your car.

Is that likely to be a difficult process for them?  Also if they don't do some part of it right are they likely to f***k something else up in the process?

If they use a new ECU they should have no problems
