Hey, atm i have a Golf 1.4 :undecided: and its doing very little to the gallon, i was wondering if I went for a 1.8 GTI would the fuel economy be any worse? because the engine wouldnt be working as hard maybe.
I know for dual carridgeway/motorway driving the 1.8 might be a little better as it wouldnt be screaming at over 4k rpm to do 80mph.
but what would they both do on back road/town driving please?
even if the 1.8 was a little worse I'd still prefer it as i could actually have some fun in it

A similar thing happened with me mate, i bought a 1.0litre mk2 fiesta on the intentions of it being a cheep runabout..it used more petrol than my current Mk3 GTI..i assume that because it had to be pushed to do 10mph it used more petrol..

yeh, mk4 golfs aren't exactly the lightest cars and a 1.4 engine really struggles with hills :P

I had an Audi A4 with the 1.8 20v non Turbo (125bhp) engine and it regularly reported getting 35mpg+. I now have a Skoda Octavia (same sort of size car as the A4) with the much newer 1.6 FSI 115bhp engine (same engine as found in the Mk5 Golf) and easily get it up to 40mpg on the same sort of drive.
What sort of figures are you getting from your 1.4 and what sort of driving is it? Is it mostly stop-start in traffic or constant speeds?

My 1.8T returns about 22-23mpg around town, 30-31mpg motorway. Your 1.4 will almost certainly be better on fuel.
-
you must have a heavy foot dom, my lcr sees 28 round town and 34 35 on motorway.
i thought when i changed my 4mo to the lcr id see alot better mpg but tbh i only see 2-3 more mpg in the lcr.

Mine is about the same as Dom's sometimes a little worse.

I have a 1.8t mk3 and my fuel economy used to be shocking I'd get literally 200 miles from a full tank! But since the last 2 months or so I've been driving much more police friendly and am now getting 350-400 miles to a tank.
How heavy your foot is makes a huge difference! I didn't think it would make half as much difference as it did to mine
