Ok so went over to the garage to look at the golf because its not been running right, been hesitiant up through the revs and losts of exhaust popping. Now i've been aware of a code, the only engine code which is Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor Sproradic Signal Otside Tolerance. So i'm thinking that distributor is needing tweeked. I marked it when it was removed for refurbishment and was replaced in the same position.
Anyway i'm adjusting the distributor whilst holding the revs at a fast idle, giving it the odd rev, to see if I can get it run better when I looked down and through a gap in my heat wrapped downpipe it was glowing red hot !!
So i'm thinking no amount of distributor adjustment will cure that will it?? It can onll be a blockage surely?? Also causing the lumpy running. Now the cat that is on it is a genuine second hand replacement with its core all intact but the one I took off during the strip down was destroyed inside. I pulled some of it out the exhaust but there must be some still in there lodged somewhere yeah?? Nothing else that can really cause this problem I assume. No amount of overfueling etc should cause that when stationary? Just want to make sure it can be nothing else before I begin taking all apart.
Also, I had a code flash up for my OSF abs sensor, changed it now i'm getting a code for the NSF, upon erasing the code the ABS light goes out for a split second then returns. Should I just change that sensor too. I'm just concerned that if I change that it will then bring up a code for one of the rears or does it not work that way.
Sorry for the long speil just want some knowledgable advice so can get all this sorted for its mot.
Cheers

Have you put the ECU in setup mode when you adjusted the distributor? If not the ECU will keep changing ignition timing and you'll not get anywhere....

Not even sure how to do that mate, just have a basic code reader. i know the distributor needs set within a tight tolerance. Surely thats not what is causing the red hot exhaust?
-
Yes this causes your red hot exhaust.... your ignition timing is fully out and much too late, hence mixture burning in the manifold instead of inside the cylinders...
You'll need a VW specific tool to go into setup mode. Generic readers can only read fault codes and reset them usually - go for VCDS (formerly known as VAG COM), and go into basic settings -> adaptation and start block 000...
-
Mmmm...not too good them. I know VCDS is expensive. Might need to find someone with it, and knows how to use it, to help me out. I had a limited version of it on my laptop but the hard drive is corrupted.

Been doing some research and this is what I appear to need to do via vagcom. Just need to find someone local with vagcom...
This is the info I have...
Engine running...
Enter engine 01
Measuring block 08 display group 7
Four blocks of data will appear
Rotate distributor until value block 1 reads between 57 and 60
And value in block 2 is between 5 and 8

Can you not just set the distributor up using the pulley at timing belt
side?
Then i thought you couldnt really go wrong as long as firing order is okay at distributor and leads, cause rotor arm can only go one way.

Thats what I thought but apparently it can't be done that way on these engines. Hence why I saw no improvment manually adjusting the distributor. Needs to be hooked up to vagcom.

I think it's because the cam sensor is in the distributor. Seems to me like you are actually setting the timing of that rather than the ignition when you set the distributor up in Vagcom.

Yeah thats what i'm needing set....the hall sensor/cam sensor timing!

Managed to cure this without the need for vagcom. Its was just the distributor was needing removed and refitted as noticed the mark on it did not line up with the rotor arm when at tdc. Runs superb now and throwing no codes. Also got my abs sorted with just replacing the sensor. thanks for all your info though!!
