Title: which outdoor type compact camera
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 24 June 2012, 14:37
Gonna get myself a new compact camera that can withstand being chucked in a backpack and used for mountain biking in the alps. Would be nice if it took good videos for trackdays aswell, and cost circa £250. Any suggestions?

Have my eye on the Nikon coolpix aw-100 atm

Have a look at the Fuji Finepix range. I have the Z1 model which is still going strong after 3 years of abuse. I think the 150 quid mark will be enough to spend on a compact in my opinion.

Have a look at Pentax's Optio W range - mine's been snorkelling in Australia among other exploits - still works fine.

If it has to be waterproof then, the AW100 or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3.

splashproof will do, it seems waterproof and outdoor proof go hand in hand from the camera's iv'e seen

pretty much all the waterproof ones will be drop proof / freeze proof it really comes down to how robust you want it / the environment you'll be using it in.  If we're talking camping / hill walking in summer then, any compact kept in a waterproof bag is going to be fine, if it's more walking in the Isle of Skye in February then you're going to want an all weather job.

Or it could just be that you're worried about it getting a few knocks, at which point a soft case would protect a normal compact.

Personally if I was buying then as said i'd go for the AW100 or the lumix, if it was a compact (bridge) then I'd go for the P7100 (mainly as it will work with my existing Nikon flashes).

Look at the IP rating on any weatherproofed camera.  This will give you a clear idea of the protection that it has.
