Title: how to fit a thermostat, haynes manual???
Post by: billytheboot on 15 June 2005, 00:33
Hello, could someone please help me... Just bought a thermostat for my hotter hatch 1989 Golf GTI 8v, could anyone give advice on fitting please? If I was organised I would have got hold of a haynes manual (big ask - could anyone scan the section) but haven't had the little beauty for long. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Removal
1 The thermostat is located in the bottom of the coolant pump behind the inlet elbow. To remove it, first drain the cooling system.
2 Unbolt the inlet elbow from the coolant pump and remove the seal and thermostat (see illustrations).
3 Clean the coolant pump and elbow of any scale or corrosion.

Refitting
1 Refitting is a reversal of removal procedure. Always fit a new seal.
2 On completion, refill the cooling system.

Just in case the Haynes description is a little vague, the thermostat is located in the housing on the front of the block at the bottom, on the other end of the bottom radiator hose :)

In the 'normally useless' haynes manual I bet ;)
