Title: How long does it take to build a Golf?
Post by: MK6-Fan on 22 June 2012, 22:07
Ok, this has probably beeen asked a million times (but I did do a search prior to opening this thread.)

How long does it take typically/generally to build a Golf?

It's just that my dealer says that my car is being built in early July & could be at the dealers by end of July.

Will MK6 building be quicker now that they need to make way for MK7 switchover?

Cheers

A couple of hours to actually assemble it. However it will be on the production line for a few days as far as I know.

That's actually not as long as I thought. For some reason I was thinking it would take around 2 weeks to build the car from scratch!   :embarassed:  :embarassed:  :embarassed:  :embarassed:

Thanks for your informative answer.

Your right, haha! I can't wait any longer (even though I will just have to) but it will definetaly be worth the wait.

Have you been on youtube and looked at the actual plant making the Golfs. I'm sure there is 4 videos all in showing you the car being assembled. I wont give you links as searching for them should kill some more time for you

Judging by the number of threads on here to do with problems I would say about 3 minutes per car!!!! Assembled by Gibralter monkeys!!! Serviced by Amoeba!!!

You need to watch Mega Factory's on the Discovery channel as it has shown numerous car marques being manufactured, fascinating stuff how all the parts come together in the right sequence as every car is different from the last with literally thousands of car spec permutations

Many years ago I got on the Vauxhall Vectra production line in Luton which was really interesting, obviously no understanding of what a good car was back then

I've done maintenance work in the nissan plant a couple of times and had a walk around the production line. pretty amazing how it all comes together.

I've done some work on the sequencing plants for some rather big names, the sequencing issue's not that hard, but the production scheduling systems can change it's mind on what colour bodies they want on the line and in what sequence up to the very last second.  Normally because they haven't had a delivery in line with the JIT principles.

Usually just a few hours from when the painted shell leaves it's temporary (day or two max) storage to mosey on to the line.  These factories have no room for cars just sitting around doing nothing.  Apart from when it comes to the evoque, they had them stashed up all over the place and rented warehouses to stash them in.

If you stop production, you always know how much your nuts are gonna hurt from an ear bashing, based on the colour of the overalls walking through the door....

I should point out I haven't worked on any VAG installations....which is why I own a Golf :-)

My Mk5 took about 5 days to assemble as I remember ringing them every day and they told me at what stage it was at.

As far as I remember there were 8 checkpoints along the way.

I seem to remember that one of the reasons behind the MK6 being brought in to production was that it took too long to build a MK5 something like 40 hours from start to finish and the MK6 production was designed to reduce the production costs and has almost halved it to just over 20. This is in line with other manufacturers.

i would fancy that!

I'm thinking about taking another trip to the ring but with a stop off at wolfsburg while I'm over there.

a convoy from the UK would be good fun!

driving to dover from mine is a 1100km trip and a waste of time - if i get the ferry to amsterdam its only 350km to the ring.

think its about 100 miles from the ring to wolfsburg.

What would you recommend as the best route then? I just did the AA Route planner for a bit of fun, but if there was enough interest for this then id be up for it. it would be good to try and plan it for when they start building the MK7. I wonder if Neil Birkitt maight be able to put us in touch with someone?

if you live on the north its definitely best to get the ferry to amsterdam from newcastle or hull. i went from newcastle to amsterdam on the ferry overnight and it was fine then its a nice drive to the ring from there.

i guess if your from the south you have the option of the ferry or the tunnel.

its only 3 or 4 hours from amsterdam to the ring.

I really hope I get the car by end of July, car is being built first week of July.

So, if others are saying it only takes between a few days to a week to build/assemble the car & 3-4weeks to deliver from factory to dealer, I should have it by end of July?

Mine was built wk5 which was at the end of feb and I picked her up on the 1st, so I wud feel confident for the end of July mate...it's not the build time that takes the time, it's the time it's spent at Emden waiting for a ship...

I know back in feb there was a back log of vehicles that had been built around the same time as mine and was just waiting for a ship, mine and Scott's was one of the lucky ones to catch a ship but there were plenty still waiting after 3wks or more...

I think it was all to do with the new reg and I wud think by now the rush wud of calmed...

Your right mate, I think it is the waiting on the ship from Emden that takes the longest.

That's great to hear that you think I could have it by end of July (that's what dealer was quoting twice anyway) so it sounds like July it is!

As you say now it's calmed down it could help make the dispatch quicker than when the new regs were out.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are all Golf's (no matter the trim level) made on Emden?  :undecided:  :embarassed:

Cheers for the positive response anyway matey!

Yes mate as far as I know there all built in Emden and your car once on a ship will either dock at Sheerness(mine dock here) or Grimsby...

The cars are built in Wolfsburg and then shipped to Emden by train for ferry transport to England.

Speaking to VW today regarding my GTD order, apparently the actual build can take up to 2 weeks. The assembly of the major components probably only takes minutes of each stage, the fine detailing, interior, paintwork will probably take up the time. I find it hard to believe that 2 weeks is a lead time that VW work towards though. More like 2 days maximum for a company of that scale. I recon if I had the parts to hand I could build one from scratch in half that time they quoted me.

a bit off topic but i saw this programme on discovery the other day about how they build the merc AMG SLS

that factory is unreal. the amount of automation AND man power is amazing. no wonder they're so expensive when you see how much old fashioned hand built/assembled work goes into the car. the engine is fully hand built by the same bloke
