Title: Macbook Air
Post by: bobbarley on 21 June 2012, 18:18
Just received my brand new Macbook Air in the post the other day and I have to say, it's awesome!

I didn't realise until after I put my order in that they released a new model last week, lucky I hesitated for a few days!

Intel core i-5 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD drive, new Intel 4000 graphics.  £798 with corporate discount from the Apple online store.  It's not the cheapest machine around, but it's amazing quality, super thin as well!

The biggest surprise is the SSD in the thing.  I've got an SSD in my main PC, but this thing is even quicker!

Anyone else got a New Pro or Air?  If so, what are your thoughts?

I'm looking at the new Air.

Does it feel flimsy or fragile?

It feels really sturdy, quality is as good as the iPads etc.  It feels like if I dropped it it would stay in once piece.

However, worth bearing in mind that it has no protective glass over the screen.

Get yourself a nice case to protect aliminum casing , try incase bit pricy but very good

It's great isn't it?  For such a small thing it's so fast!  Keyboard takes a bit of getting used to, but I like the super shallow keys, just wish they were a little closer together :)

Ive had a pro for a year now and agree with everything you say.

Its worth getting a case to keep it in.

I've had an MBP for around a year too. Recently fitted an SSD and the difference it made is incredible! Sooooo fast now! It's even more of a joy to use! I have Windows 7 in bootcamp and Ubuntu in a virtual machine so all my bases are covered too :)

I'm thinking of adding Windows 7 at some point, got to be careful with only 64GB to play with

Trying to get my 2TB NAS drive up and running at the moment.

I quite like the keypad tho it does take some practice.  I want to add windows 7 but may wait for the arrival of windows 8.  I got 128gb so should have a bit to play with.  The damn thing is mega quick unlike my last laptop which at the time was the bees knees.  Still finding my way around but love launch control, in fact there is nothing not to love really

The fact lots of people are buying Apple machines and sticking Windows on them says a lot, I've had to do it for a few people already

that's why macs have become an option for many people. If they don't like OSX then they can go back to windows with not fuss. Best of both worlds, an operating system they are familiar with in a computer that looks better than most.

Would you not want to try OSX first to see if you like it

Whats the point in paying double the price for a machine.. only for it to do what a normal PC could do for half the price??

I would say more than half the people who buy macs get them because of the apple fad. the rest most possibly need them

I'm sure the 700,000+ other Mac users also said that

I've never had a virus in 17 years of owning a Microsoft computer.

and remember kids, PC's don't get Mac viruses!

Same, I've always been careful with what I download!

On another note, I ordered a 500GB Hybrid SATA/SSD hard drive today; basically a 500GB drive with 4GB of NAND storage.  It monitors your habits and pre-loads the NAND memory with the things you're most likely to use.  In tests it's almost as fast as an SSD and spanks any normal disc drive.

I'm going to pop it into a USB 3 caddy, should be seriously fast!

back in the day I had a bout of blaster worm but that was easily resolved. Not sure a Worm can be classified as a virus, I get so confused with virus, trojan and worms.

I've just ordered the crucial 256gb M4. will be with me Wed and going to put it in a 2007 Santa Rosa macbook pro. Can't wait to see the old 5 year old laptop boot up in 15 seconds!

Just remember, your MBP will be sata-2 so you won't see the speeds you'll expect. It'll probably peak at about 250-260MB/s. Still a massssssive difference though! Latency goes to something like 0.01ms

Just installed it. took 1 hour from taken it apart to having Lion installed and ready to go. 24 seconds to bootup. Timed it. SSD drives are just brilliant.

Opening the case and bunging in the SSD

I've also noticed the battery seems to last a nit longer too, or is that my imagination?

Just getting more and more impressed with the MBA as the days go on.  I've spent the last 2 days hammering Diablo 3 on it and with the odd bit of lag here and there it's brilliant.  Obviously not like a desktop PC, but MUCH better than I expected.

For general internet use etc it's still faultless.  So easy to use, I've really grown to like OS X.  Provided I'm sitting properly the keyboard is also pretty good for typing on.

My girlfriend has one of these Mac Book Pro things, I gave it a go the other day.

Everyone goes on about how quick they are and how smooth, well trying to flick through thousands of pictures took a while as it took so long to load, opening applications and although when it finally did it, the apps loaded quickly, it seemed to take a while before trying to open it.

My 4 year old HP Pavilon with 4GB RAM and Windows 7 opens things instantly and can scroll through pictures at ease!

Personally, I don't get the Mac hype.

I imagine it was an old MBS.  the new ones are SSD, so everything is pretty much instant.  If it's not, it's faulty.
