All,
I have a 1.8T GTI and a high pitch noise has started when i turn the engine on cold - it lasts for about 30sec then there is a pshhh noise sometimes.
It is also happening when the fans come on.
I haven't driven much recently mainly 1 mile trips....
The noise only happens if the engine is cold so popping to shops and then back it doesnt happen.
any thought on what it is and how expensive it will be!!!

Whats the engine code?
Could be the secondary air intake at a guess
-
I believe it AGN but will have to check when home this evening.
-
My money almost certainly will be a sticking starter motor
-
sounds like secondary air pump to me with the pshh noise, have a look under front of car and look for this (in pic) if it has a gap round it then its probably that theres a thread somewhere on how to fix or remove it

I would have sid starter motor too if it wasnt for the "psssh". Mine sounds like a scooby on first start followed by the "psssh", that's just the secondary air pump. I dont have any high pitched whine though :undecided:
-
Someone's mine makes a pretty loud beep if there's no petrol in it
-
I would say SAI too, it just warms the cat up but annoying as hell!
-
Thanks everyone - will take a look once its stopped raining
Can anyone describe where its located?

Remove this cover.

And it looks like this. You should see it straight away.

Can be pricey for a new one, some vags have a selenoid as well that sometimes fails.
All in all I've removed someones before and bypassed it with a resistor. Its purpose is only to turn on during startup to help warm the cat up. There's no harm in removing it, once removed you will get a light on dash, but a resistor will sort this.
-
resistor doesn't stop light on dash or didn't with mine anyway

should do thats the point of adding it in

Exactly the same thing happens with mine (MK4 GTI T), noise usually lasts about 30/40 seconds and bang it's gone, unusual I thought at first but the person who owned it before me even said the same thing, he was a registered mechanic and had a look at a few things as it was his girlfriends car.
Ended up being nothing to do with the engine or the turbo and I asked whether he'd checked the secondary air pump/injector, which he hadn't done, going to get round to doing it at some point, however V-DUBS rarely need them nowadays.
I'm almost sure it is that and to be honest I'm not exactly the most experienced with cars.

That all the time then?
-
Nah I like a mix of both petrol and diesel to lubricate the tank better

Im getting this problem with my car althou i dont get a sqeek noise mine just sound slike its running rough for about 40 sec then i hear a pssssssh the revs drop and the car sounds how it should lol am i guessing this is my secondary air thingy? also isit much of an issue? or can it be left while i sort other stuff? :D

Can be left, like said it only turns on when engine is cold for a duration around 30-60seconds, to aid in pumping more air into the system to warm it up quicker.

Kool thanks for that, i feel mega releved now thought it was a massive issue :D

Common thing to go wrong, I removed one of a 60k passat recently as it had gone and bypassed it as it kept throwing a light up. As its got no real use anyway, just was fitted with it for the emission regulations. But MOT time it won't effect emissions test as it only such a small purpose it serves, which is just this one task during startup.
