Title: Odd running issues (2.0l 8v)
Post by: Adam87 on 20 June 2012, 21:45
Hi all, Just got my Gti 8v and have noticed a reluctance to start off the key without a dab of throttle on first start, when it does fire up its lumpy until you blip the throttle and it settles down to a slight hunt/misfire, also when you give it anymore than a tickle of throttle on the go (which you will as its a GTi) it misses and hops up the rev range  :undecided:

Seems to start everytime once you get the knack of it and runs smoothly if your gentle.

So far i have found a corroded HT lead (found it by breaking it to get it off) it started no worse and ran the same at idle as before, but was much worse through the rev range, replaced the leads (onto what i might add looked to be pretty fresh plugs) and its back as it was before i snapped the lead

So, any idea's? common faults? I think it is ignition related but don't wanna throuw cash at it willy nilly so after a direction or a lead (excuse the pun) to follow

Cheers in advance

Adam

Perfect that

So ill be checking my throttle body, and timing then, handy really as one of the jobs on the list up to now is the belt

So cleaning the throttle body is it just a case of pulling the air duct off and spraying a load of carb cleaner in it?

Cleaned up the throttle body today, while i was there i dismantled and cleaned up the crankcase breather system, taped up the cables to the crank position sensor and checked, cleaned and refitted the dizzy cap and rotor arm as well a checking all connections to the coilpack.

And.......... It seemed worse, at first anyway, coughing and spluttering, huge flat spots and misfires worse than before, and it would struggle to get past 3k rpm.

But then it started to clear up, by the time i finished the 20 mile drive home it was pulling stronger than ever and reving freely, still the odd cough but no flat spots

So, new question, do these ECU's relearn there conditions as they go? seems odd that it was worse then got miles better as if the ecu was struggling with the changes then started to get its head round them  :undecided:

What do we think??

mine seems to have a flat spot at low down revs it takes a wile to go then power comes. almost feels like turbo lag but without the power of a turbo obviously

And presto, the MAF is the culprate, did think 'damn, after i did all that yesterday' but i guess it will do her good to have a clean breather and TB, just need a new MAF now but at least i can run without it in the mean time

You wanna go to the scrappy mate, rather than running without it. i had maf problems n went n got one from scrappy, only a tenner. just until you save for a new one, as they're quite expensive..

mines is exactly the same, do you know how to solve this lag problem? Thanks
