Title: Back to a Mk3 GTi
Post by: bigun on 20 June 2012, 17:07
Hey up all,

Well, after leaving the Mk3 fold (my wifes car) after she wasn't using the old one and it went rotten, we've moved to a little village in Lincolnshire and being a little remote she wanted another Mk3 to run around in. To cut a long story short, we picked up a little beauty the other week. 8v, 2 owners, full VW service history, spotless. Has even got proper VW colour coded reversing sensors! Got a few things to do - picking up a VR6 splitter tomorrow, got a stainless cat back system to go on, fancy some TT comps and a spot of lowering then probably recaros. Should be sorted (are they ever?) after that. Not bad for a run around!

The new one

My toys

Golf Mk2 16v track car - massive spec (bought like this with friends) - this pic just after I managed to lose the bolts holding the starter motor/front engine mount round Oulton Park. Resulted in smashing the oil filter and pissing oil all over the track. Oops!

Cheers

Probably just to freshen it up a little. I'm obsessed with TT Comps on Mk3's, I think they look excellent so will look for some of those later in the year. Lowered on springs/shocks, and Recaro interior. Theres a couple of things to do for the MOT - (knocking at the rear and needs a new ABS light pod as the bulb has blown and seized) so they're the first things.

Aye, well pleased with it. £400 too! Can't believe how little you can pick them up for now.

yeah its great aint it. you did better than me. i got mine for £450 but i need new exhaust, rear wheel bearings, wiper mfa stalk, rocker cover gasket and a bit of welding. but it does have full vw service and 103000 miles on the clock and the paint is spotless. just goes to show tho you can get a really good deal. you got a better deal than me by the looks of it tho
very nice.

Its got 144k on the clock (same as the last one strangely) but is really very tight. The last owner was a VW technician which has helped. Everything is spotless even down to having the original dealers tax disc holder and original VW floor trays. I'm reserving judgement on the underneath until its up on ramps. I've been under it on jacks but theres a limit to what you can see really - it looks sound but I know from experience something may be lurking!

Well, picked up a genuine VR6 splitter today - thanks 'Mush' - and got that stuck straight on in the rain. Bit of a difference (i think I might have to start a project page - I've a feeling its going to head that way)

Same here with my Cabrio, took off N/S/F arch to find two dents inline across the wheel arch, one at the front and the other at the rear of the arch. No marks what so ever on the moulding strangely enough, luckily no rust!!!

Your right about the prices too as I picked my '95 2.0i Cabrio up with at the time no marks on the bodywork and 78k on the clock for £590 and it flew through the MOT with just advisories on slight corrosion on all four brake lines. Not bad since I brought it from Penzance and i would have thought the sea air would have started to make a meal of her

Great look GTi BTW

Thanks, its seems to be anyway - MOT next month will really tell if anything is hidden (doesn't seem to be tho). Its just clicked over 147k.

Finally got the niggly little bits sorted that were irritating me so assuming all is ok with MOT, we can start putting the nice stuff on. Anyway, couple of better photos below after a quick wash today.

So far I've done:

Rebadged - I prefer the OEM look so new grille badge and rear badge (there's going to be a tweak to that soon tho!)
Stainless steel cat back exhaust - looks better
Drivers side headlight - old one had a hole where a stone must have hit it
Drivers side front fog blanks - as per headlight
Replaced ABS/Airbag panel as ABS light wasn't working - all sorted and light goes on and off as it should
Missus private reg put on.
