Title: Gap Insurance
Post by: Silverblade on 18 June 2012, 20:09
I realise this is probably off topic, but probably most new Mk VI owners would have been offered Gap insurance, hence posting here - I was today at £400.

I gather that in the event of a write off or total loss - theft that the insurance coughs up the price of a replacement brand new vehicle, for 4 years. What do you guys do - have you taken it or just considered it another £400 to find ? I would be interested to hear some thoughts. For my point of view I consider that if the car is totalled within the 1st year, then I thought the main insurance company normally provided a brand new car anyway, so this is really going forward into years 2, 3 and 4 of ownership.

I've taken it but I've found it much cheaper by Googling

My dealer did it for £250 on both of ours. They did it on interest free over twelve months. It's a no brainer for me cos if you've had loads of extras on ya car the insurance wouldn't normally cover this.

I think you can get GAP from loads of places, perhaps EVO could do a deal for you?

I went with Car2Cover last yr, very good policy for £178, 3yr, 15k return to invoice, can be cheaper depending on your requirements but i found this covered everything

i'd say its a no brainer given the trouble some members have had !

plenty of threads on here which go into much more detail

its piece of mind should the worst happen

also your insurer may not get you a new car as it depends on the insurer! Admiral (my insurer) don't do this.

I got mine from HERE (http://www.ala.co.uk). After cashback from Quidco worked out at £99 for three years cover, return to invoice.

It won't be free though, nothing is ever free, as you say it's part of the deal but that means there's bigger discounts to be had off the car if they're willing to include gap insurance (IMO)

correct its easier for dealers to factor in accessories and GAP dealers as part of the overall discount, as to VW it looks like they are not discounting the car so much, i ordered my rocco as soon as orders books opened so discounts were small so dealer did that

I went to ALA

£119 3 years return to invoice - Dealer couldn't get anywhere near - he said he'd match it but when I told him the price he said somehting like "you've got a good price - we're nowhere near that"

edit: forgot to mention (as Mike. has) that with Quidco I also got somehting like another £20-25 off that price

As above, it's well worth having IMHO on a GTi or R.

Both are quite "nickable" cars, yet you pay no extra premium for GAP insurance than a similar priced Mondeo

Most GAP insurance companies do exclude mods though.

Also remember a lot of insurance companies provide back to invoice on the first year of the cars life so defer your GAP to start at the end of the first year.

In my experience return to invoice GAP insurance is a must, my mk5 was written off in the floods in 07 car was nearly 3 years old, car policy paid me 14k and gap insurance made up the difference to 24.5k what I paid for it, Best £199 I have ever spent

Shop around and get return to invoice gap  I think there are a few different types tho ?

Ive had it on my last 3 cars and never had to claim but always had to confidence that in an accident if the insurance company pays up 10k and the car is worth 15k then I wont be out of pocket.

The only car I didnt take it out on I totalled and lost alot of money as I had spent alot of money making it as new.  Happy to have it over the few years it covers and if I dont claim then its a bonus, if I have to claim then I win.
