Title: URGENT - DSG/ESP malfunctioning in GTI MKVI - Help!!!
Post by: gti210ps on 18 June 2012, 12:01
Help needed.  I was driving my GTI MKVI today (50K miles), the ESP icon came on my dashboard and then the DSG died - died as in, no P, no D, no N, no gear to select from - the gas pedal was not responding, i had to let the car roll to the side of the road and turn off the ignition.  When i turned it back on, everything was working normal.  This is the 2nd time this has happened to me in the past 6 months.  What might be wrong guys?  Any ideas??

Did you buy it from brand new? If so take it back and tell them to fix it, assuming there is some sort of warranty programme?

Got vagcom? Give it a scan.

I'm guessing at some sort of intermittent electrical problem.

Obviously you've not seen his other thread!  :lipsrsealed:

To the OP, you've had a fair share of problems it seems with this Mk6. If it was me I'd be thinking a bit beyond simple warranty work - i.e. some form of recompense or even rejection should problems persist/ increase.

Been to the dealer today, run a diagnostic, it showed nothing wrong.  Dealer said they are sending the diagnostic results to Germany and will get back to me.  Funny it showed nothing wrong though because it keeps on doing it plus today from D6 it momentarily went to D (no gear selected) and then back to D6.  This happened like 5 times in 2 hours' time.  Don't know what to do, if dealer says that the diagnostic shows nothing's wrong with it, what can i do???

Get their service manager to go for a run with you. Get them to acknowledge the fault and then ya half way there.

Do you happen to know whether VW has sent out letters in the UK to recall DSGs made between 2007-2009?  Mine is 2009, I know for certain VW America has done this.  The thing is, it has 50k miles on it, it has not troubled me before but in the past 2 days it's been a nightmare.  I am afraid to drive with the kids in the car, as it goes into neutral while i am on 80mph.

Is there any way this is a glitch of the mecatronic unit that will just go away???

No it wont go away needs fixing, I think it was 2008 models that sufferd from this issue, but having said that your car could have this problem. Get a second opinion from another dealer ? They need to rule out the mecatronic unit firstly , they may have to replace the all DSG box?

Demand a loan car tell them you have children and theres a real safety issue going here:sick:

It won't imo go away its a electrical to mechanical interface that imo is causing the problem. The unit in that slides into the gearbox. Your best bet maybe to video what it does when it causes an issue.

Left me in the road today, managed to roll it to the garage.  The check engine has come on as well today.  They said they'll be running diagnostics again and are waiting to hear from Germany before deciding what's wrong.  Man, it's 40 degrees celcium here and i will be driving to work in a 20-year old toyota...

No ... it was USA only.  The fault in question was related to a faulty batch of switches I think, which resulted in them "sticking" when the gerabox was hot.  The symptoms were a jerky take off from standstill - so not the same as your fault.

I had my Mechatronics unit on my 2008 R32 (with the above fault) replaced under warranty with no questions asked.  They know the serial number of faulty units.

Good luck with yours .. hope you get is sorted ..... it does sound like it could be the mech unit.  Did you have the recommended DSG service at 40,000 miles ?

yes i did have it, thankfully today they called me and acknowledged that whatever is wrong with it will be covered by warranty.  So I am hoping to get the car back ... well, sometime in the next couple of months   How long did it take to change your mecatronic from the moment they diagnosed it until you got the r32 back/did they have it ordered with your chassis number??
