Hi guys, right I had my car re mapped on thurs and decided to take it for a burn down the a47, was so impressed with how different it felt all the way to 145mph, until the oil pressure light flashed and beeped at me, so I pulled off straight away but it was to late..the engine had heat seized :( so had to get towed home by a peugeot  306 gti6 :( tried turning it over by the crank and its solid..won't budge one bit. I love the golf though and instead of binning it and getting another I've decided its gna be cheaper to just get another agu lump and drop it in. I was just wondering if anyone has a guide or any info if they have done this before?? Thanks

think its going to be that your pickup pipe has blocked and by giving it a good thrash down your private race track killed it as it couldnt get oil around the engine quick enough. also if its starved the engine long enough what else could it have done?turbo could have been damaged too?
-
naming roads and saying the speed is not a very good idea on a public forum that mr police officer comes on
on another note feel for you as i had my engine seize due to pick up pipe
-
I saw a few ppl had said about the pick up pipe, is that deep in the engine somewhere?? Will give me something to check when I get another one, I am so gutted about it though but def not leaving the old girl, will just find another lump.
-
I did think about the turbo as well actually, is there any ways of checking it off the car?

Lol that's very true! Didn't want to show off just fancied a blast as it was the first time I'd gone top end.
-
Swap is easy enough. Unbolt downpipe with 4 bolts, leave that loose behind engine.
remove pulley from power steering and undo 4 bolts on the pump - leave everything sealed.
Remove all wiring and put over to one side
Id take the shafts out with them sstill attached to the box, so undo the hub nut and 3 bolts on ball joint and swing struts out the way - shafts will hang down - undo 2x 13mm bolts on clutch cylinder and also the gear linkages, tuck up behind
support engine and undo all mount bolts
slide forward with front panel and rad off the car engine is out....swap all the bits over onto new one

That's very handy Chris thanks for that! Am I right in thinking you've done this before lol??
-
Done loads. Can near enough do them with my eyes closed. I can have a engine in and running in under 2 hours.
-
id actlly pay cash to see someone do it with their eyes closed lol not doubting u by the way. the whole front panel can be unbolted to ease access which is gd
-
you just gotta take the sump off pal to get to the pick up pipe and then remove 2x 10mm or 13mm bolts and its off! and theres a little green o ring seal too, so when you get your new engine i really really can not stresss enough how much you should replace it lol it cost me what? a tenner for that and the seal, will not take long at all to do with the engine out. to check the turbo all i can think is feel the play in the shaft? see if its rough when turning about all you can do without striping it

Ok I'm def going to change the pick up pipe when I get another engine! Just to save it happening again!!
-
Is this something you tink I ought to look into if my mileage is low? Just picked up a 20vt with round 70k miles

Definitely worth changing the pickup pipe with the next service
-
Anyone doing 145mph on minor roads is an idiot, sorry to be harsh
-
It was very late at night with no cars on the road

-
An it sounded pretty healthy too.
an BIG BONUS is he changed the pick up pipe very recently along with genuine brand new pvc system which cost him best part £100 alone
-
Yes I agree a VERY good deal! Can't wait to start my 600mile road trip on sunday to get it lol :D. Yeah he said about that.. One less thing for me to worry about, but saying that I might change the pick up pipe every week just to be safe ;) lol

Every 60k is what is recommended, changing the oil every 6k plus only using fully synth will help lots
-
Yeah I planned on changing it every 6 when I got it but it only lasted 5 :(
