Title: Navigation Directions
Post by: MonkeyP on 14 June 2012, 22:45
I have recently noticed that when i use my navigation on my car the directions don't come up in the instrument panel display. is this normal or have i got a problem with my system?

Also tweeter keeps crackling which i know is not normal but have been told this is a common problem. is this true?

You should get directions on the MFD too, this worked on my CW GTI MK6 with the RNS510, no crackling either. Take it to your dealer.

I get the Nav directions on mine MFD, I take it you have cycled though the MFD settings to toggle to the navigation pane?

Also I have no tweeter crackling, so I would go back to your dealers.

Have you retro-fitted the RNS510?, if so you have to code it with VCDS for them to work on the MFD.

Recently? As in it used to be there and no longer is?
Either way, yeah like everyone has said its meant to be there.
I much prefer the display on the MFD as it counts you down to junctions etc which can be handy when it is telling you to turn left and there are umpteen roads to turn left at

Well as i have only had my car a month I have just found out that the previous owner retro fitted the system but didnt tell the dealer. They have offered to fix the problem. Also going to be very cheeky and ask them while they are fixing the problem can they throw in the handsfree bluetooth kit! lol

I think you might struggle with that mate cos to fix the nav issue only requires plugging a laptop into the car whereas fitting the bluetooth means taking quite a lot of the trim off including taking the stereo out.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the info.

They need to fix the tweeter as it should not be crackling but will see if they will install the bluetooth at a reduced cost. theres no harm in asking.

One last thing sorry to be a pain. are you able to search through the MDI track list on the MFD or is the only way to do it via the system?

Im sure but could be wrong that the official VW Bluetooth is fitted under the passenger seat so it would involve a lot of running wires etc to there and back to the head unit. I don't know if the loom is already present.  However 3rd party bluetooth units like the one I have "Fiscon" can be plugged into the back of the stereo and work the exact same way.

As for being able to search via the MFD, no. It only shows the song being played.

There was also another one called mObridge doing the rounds that got an equally good write up. Both just pop down the back of the head unit without any issue.
I bought my Fiscon through a group buy on here and must say its been flawless.

You will probably find them on eBay or such like as bluetooth comes on the cars now. I know when I come to trade mine in I'll be selling it on there. Or have a look at the classifieds in here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyCPk7T7sp8&feature=plcp has a video of it working.

It won't win "many" oscars as it was a 5 minute job while the Mrs was in the supermarket and I was bored protecting the car in the car park

I would personally buy an oem unit and fit it behind the head unit, thats what i have and have just bought one off ebay for a friend, at least then the mic is hidden in the overhead light unit rather than on the A pillar. I paid £199 +£10 delivery.

The dealers will tell you that bluetooth cannot be retro fitted (other than that standalone touchscreen affair that they offer as an accessory) and to be fair, they are sort of right. Those of us that have retro fitted bluetooth have used a patch loom supplied by the third party, as none of the wiring comes installed the car unless it bluetooth was factory fitted.

You can hide the mic behind the overhead light unit with the 3rd party ones.
It doesn't matter which version the OP buys, he still has to physically run the mic up to there.
I have mine on the A pillar and never had 1 complaint. I personally don't know if I could be bothered feeding it all the way to the light unit.

It takes 5 minutes. Remove the grab handle (2 screws), the vanity light (pops out) and the overhead console (2 bits of clipped in trim and 2 screws). Thread a length of stiff wire through, tape the mic wire to the end and pull it through. Easy peasy.

Having the bluetooth makes such a difference - particularly with the integration into the 510 display and good to hear SatNav sorted too!

Time to enjoy it now
