Title: Trickle charge Solar powered from maplins
Post by: ccaasjf on 08 June 2012, 15:27
Hiya,

I wondered if anyone had tried a trickle charger to keep the battery charged over along period of time?

Both my 12v connectors are off when the ignition is off, its a 57 plate GTI. I think its. 2008 model.

Have bought a trickle charger from Maplins and intend to connect it directly to the battery, I am going away the whole month of september and need to keep the battery charged.

Thanks Simon

I bought a battery charger which also had a trickle charge option, never used it and only just recharged it. My car went though a long period of time when it wasn't used so had to charge it back to life.

This charger was meant to give it a slow charge but the battery still kept dying so ended up buying a new battery in the end. (it died on the way to Volksfest last year which was the final straw).

I went away traveling for a month last year and left the car parked on the drive way and when I came back she started up fine first time. 1 month isn't really that long (mine was off the road for 9 months hence it died).

Unless your battery is already on it's way out you will be fine for a month. I left mine for 6 weeks and it started on the dot!

I used to have a solar powered trickle charger a few years ago.

I can only say DON'T buy one.  Mine malfunctioned in some way and the cable melted through the dashboard!

Will never do anything like that again.  Better off spending the money on a power pack to jump start your car if you leave it to go flat often.
