Well it has been 3 years since i got the GTI and i can honestly say that it has been the best car i have owned by a mile.
30000 miles covered and not one single problem or fault to speak of not even a rattle.
My spec is 5dr white with DSG, 18", ACC, cruise and lux and if i were to order it again i would only change the ACC which i think i have used
about 3 times.
I know it is always said but the cars ability lies in its jack of all trades character - it has a great blend of comfort and sport, having owned a few Type-r hondas it is a relief to get out of the car after a 2 hour drive and still be able to walk.
I am not venturing too far as next week i will pick up the replacement which is a GTD - I know its not a proper GTI but i was really impressed on the test drive and it will suit my needs at the moment better as i seem to be in the petrol station every few days.
I did look at the 35 edition but just could not justify the extra cost for essentially the same car although it does sound much better
anyway the GTD should keep me going fine for a year or two when i can have another look at maybe a MK7 GTI.
Cheers
Gareth

The GTD is a great motor esp with DSG , ACC just stays in comfort zone !! Will you be mapping it?
-
The GTD is a great 'Grand Tourer' you won't regret it - look forward to the photos

Glad to hear you've had such a pleasant experience throughout your ownership of the car. All the best with the GTD. What spec are you getting?
-
Dull question but why change for a car that is (engine aside) more or less the same as your current car?
Granted you will save money on fuel and a little bit on road tax, but the difference in depreciation over the next couple of years on a new GTD and a 3 year old GTI, would pay for one hell of a lot of petrol and still leave you with a tidy sum left over.
-
I agree Dubber. I contemplated doing the same thing but decided to keep the GTi.
Having said that, it was also an excuse to insist on the wife having a diseasel so I didn't have to!!!

I like to keep my car newish with a warranty if possible - my car will be payed for next month so i will just take the cost to change
on finance over 2 years from VW this will be a lower payment than i have been making and i also expect to make a saving of about £100 per month on fuel so the difference should be visible at the end of the month.
I know it is essentially the same car but having looked at quite a few other options none felt as nice as the golf overall, anyway i think i have wangled a pretty good deal on the GTD and my PX. The GTD is 6 months old but as new with 4k on the clock, 5door, Carbon Grey, 18", Manual with a couple of toys and that's about it but as its not brand new im saving over £5K on list.
On the depreciation front the GTI has been superb having a PX value of almost 70% after 3 years.

go get an APR K04 INSTALLED. Pretty much same MPG totally different car....

I'm probably old fashioned, but to me that may be saving on your monthly outgoings, but ultimately costing you more in the long run. I guess if you want a new car, that's the way that works for you.

Glad to hear you've many happy miles in the GTI, tbh I thort it was another thread about jumping ship so I'm glad you haven't...your be more than happy with the GTD, nice spec too bar the manual part LOL...
Do you think your map her? I know others have asked but don't think you've answered...

TBH i think i may miss the DSG most of all as it really is excellent but having a manual means the missus will drive it so i can borrow her
car when i need to tow my fishing boat, dont ask me why but she will not drive the DSG.
As for mapping i have never really thought about it - is it worth doing in the GTD as much as in the GTI??

my mates leon fr 170tdi is mapped and he loves it. same engine i think?

Yes it's definately worth getting her mapped, the Doc is the best man for the GTD, your easily see over 200bhp, can't remember the torque figures but I know there good also...

It transform the car and its like driving a GTI when mapped very smooth

I have just traded in my mapped sirocco for an ed 35 and can assure you it's like chalk and chesse, yes the map improved the 170 to 210 but nothing bets a petrol

Good on you. Get some pics up of the new ride when you get it.
Mines done 40k now. Been thinking about changing part x'ing for a fully loaded carbon demo ed35 at a local dealership. If the monthly payments were pretty much the same I'd be tempted.

I'm very sorry to hear about your transformation to a Dieseasel (sorry GTD fans, he he )
Are you sure we can't keep you here in the sweet petrol section, us 'petrol'-heads probably don't have much long left in this world, make the most of it !

I wouldn't be so sure. In my allotment of car mags (CAR, TopGear) there were more than a few sentiments expressed that diesel isn't the all-conquering alternative to petrol. In fact TopGear even recommended a few petrol variants over the diesel alternatives because, given the price difference between the two fuels, diesel isn't actually more cost-effective for some mileages.

Agreed. I've been in a diesel for the last 14 years but now I'm thinking of changing my car and I'm struggling to see the major economy benefits that I used to get with the diesel now that my mileage has dropped from 30k to 12k per year.
Obviously some petrol engines will still give you teen mpg whereas mine never goes below 35 but I'm not ruling out petrol this time....

I did manage single digits in my Mk6 GTI  (at the 'Ring).
