a decent mk2 with a decent price will always sell. the ones that dont sell are those that are stupidly overpriced for the condition they are in

You are maybe asking in the wrong place as most in here already have cars and aren't looking for another one...

I would say that a Good MK2 with all the right stuff on it should sell well - but if it's all tarted up/messed about with I guess you would have to take what someone was offering...

Also depends on what you call cheap - other question would be - why is it so cheap??

Good to hear then. So a tidy gti with long mot for under a grand will sell fairly easy then?

Haha good point. I'm gunna have a look at it tomorrow, think it might be lowered with some alloys onit, if it's a dog or been kev'd up il walk away. But it does have mot onit untill December so can't be to bad.

Well won't say how much the asking price is incase of future sale ;) but its not stupid cheap like £50

No too many dogs for sale I hate when they post pictures of it in its glory three years ago, and when you turn up its a shed or dog!
Problem is all of them are hitting 150K onwards so unless its had a rebuild lets say 100K finding one without possible head issues is near slim.
Which is why it seems only die hard fans are rebuilding projects nut by nut, bolt by bolt.
In the MK2 section we seem to patch them up, but they seem to be sold on again as its too much for the younger lot to keep fixing them.?
Plus the added road tax increases and petrol prices who wants to do 25-30MPG daily?
Once mines finished I'll be lucky to do 3k road use just like my Rallye which was 23Mpg at half chatt.
Today I have about £700 worth of spares just to keep this old gal going for the next 10 years
Even you are thinking about selling on makes my point?

Thats the flip side....

Like you I've spent THOUSANDS on my MK2 & I have no intention of selling it - even if I did I would never realize what I've spent on it...

So IMO the best MK2's are one that may already be owned by people who aren't interested in selling them...

That just leaves the TAT out there...

Unless your making over £500.00 from this car I wouldn't bother....

You could just be looking at a money pit to get it sorted or to a standard that will fetch £1K...

I bought a '88 GTI for £200.00 and then had to spend £800.00 getting it sorted.. Couldn't sell it for £1.2K so had no option but to break her to get my money back...

Learn't a lot from that car & never looked back... but it was an expensive learning curve and one I wouldn't do again..

The issues I have is that some of that TAT has either bad body work or bad running gear with money they can be fixed!
In the day parts are cheap and easily obtainable, people spent thousands on paint I did my Rallye cost me 2.5K.
Today the costs and availabilty is tight and with what Ebay selling overpriced tat, has a lot of things contributing the downfall of the numbers off golfs blantly no.'s going down every year!
I dont mind people selling what they dont want, but when it comes to buying cars so you can strip and make some cash even weighing it in for scrap metal thats when I disagree with whats going on todate.
Ironic that over priced sheds if in reality the cars worth £300 more than likely it would be saved and a project would come about. But lets say they want £800 for it becuase its worth that in parts in there minds then it will get broken up. @ £300+1000 spent bring it back up total £1300 and you have a tidy MK2 its not bad all in all?

Problem you have is that there are so many parts are now NLA that you need X amount of cars to be broken so that you can finish your project...

I've been building mine as I go along and have had access to over 20 cars and I still haven't got all the "Basic" parts I want!!

Dont see it, VAG still sell most parts and so do GSF and Eurocarparts even Heritage.
IMO there are three owners
Buyers who want a GTI because its cool and sell it on once its broken.
Buyers who want to make money.
Buyers who have one golf and are ready to spend to make it nice and keep it nice.

TBH I don't care anymore, just like the environment.
If I was Democrat in a America I would be hard liner Republican by now!

Im the last one of those three, but with my mk3, only thinking about making some pennies from this mk2 as it was offered to me cheap, think the current owner of the mk2 in question might be the first of those three

I Bet you 90% of a MK2 Bodywork & Fittings are now NLA....

And as you have found out with bumpers - Pattern parts just dont cut the mustard...

And where would you have gotten your Genuine bumper if someone hadn't broken that car???????????

I think you missed my point there Ken I needed another bumper becuase I lost a bracket.
I saw one for sale so I bought it because its the right colour NOT becuase I bum VAG.
What I paid for the bumper was reasonable had to check with some fellow vagers on here to see if it was a fair price.
The gentlemen who sold me this said the MK2 was in a bad rear accident so I bought free range! (feel better why it was broken in the first place)
Dont get me wrong I like the aftermarket one its super and plus brand new must have cost £200 If I found the bracket it would be on by now and TBF I will mock up the bracket as its actually better made plastic no mold lines etc. I'm practical if a part is better made I will use it.
As for body parts some can be welded and replaced with simular gaguge metal.
My Rallye had dodgy sills all of them do, can I can I buy new sills for a Rallye NO so I had the painter make them up and lead weld them in place?

I was classic, bought my 90 16 v for 700 smackers, thought I was soooooooooo smart.  Turns out I have spent £800 just to make usable, that said new cars are for the feeble!!!!!!!  I could have a a company car but chose the mighty mk2 ok it I get a headache from the fumes after a bit but blasting along the other night on the A roads it was as cool as anything else I have ever owned. This dude should buy it make a drink on it, why not he might even get addicted.

Buy on body. mechanical problems on these are dirt cheap to sort if you are good with a spanner

Post by: andykram on 08 June 2012, 09:02
Yep, I bought my 8v and now the 16v on body. The latter's cost me some cash to get it mechanically properly sorted (it was rammed to the floor on Konis so got it put back to standard) but now it's spot on. Never goes wrong (touch wood), gets loads of admiring glances and I'll keep it for a good while I reckon. I certainly see very few "nice, original" ones now although you do see some lovely modded ones at shows. Most on general sale seem to be pretty awful. I went all the way to Norwich once to look at one which was described as "mint". It was a shed sat in the back garden!!!

So, just got back from picking up the mk2, I didn't buy it in the end as my mate fell in love with it and now he's keeping it, here's a couple pics

It needs
New head light
Rocker cover gasket
Hand brake cable
Clutch is a bit high
And some other I'll bits

The body is near mint and it's a 3 door which is a bonus

He's happy with it and I think he's gunna sign up on here too

That list will grow over the coming weeks, as will the discoveries of hidden rust. The truth of owning any older car I think...

£800 to "get it up to scratch" is a common figure and probably about right for my Mk3 too.

That said, congratulations to you and your mate. Another one saved from the scrappy and a new hobby for your mate too. Bonus. (http://www.bandit127.com/oof_stuff/images/thumbs-up.gif)

It needs
New head light
Rocker cover gasket
Hand brake cable
Clutch is a bit high
And some other I'll bits

That list will grow over the coming weeks, as will the discoveries of hidden rust. The truth of owning any older car I think...

Bodywork wise you could make that car look tidy with a bit of elbow grease and £300, sort trim & badges, rear wiper, removed stickers, T-cut & polish, back to black bumpers, stick some self restored retro wheels on there.

Unless he wants to start spending alot of money I wouldn't take the arches off, all arch lips will be a bit rusty & may be rotted through in places.

Yep, arches are always a job you regret starting.. I've only ever had one mk2 with perfect arches underneath!

The mk2 looks great! As said, a good clean and a few bits here and there and it'll look fantastic.
