Title: Problems with a big trip!
Post by: Sam on 05 June 2012, 19:33
My friend is having her wedding in a tiny village called Crackington, just south of Brude in north Cornwall.. the issue is that because she is young and all off us are students/start up business owners a group of 4 of us simply don't have the money. We would need to stay over two nights and all hotels are 40 pp pn and there are no nearby camp-sites (camp-sites and suits don't really mix either) and the price of fuel would be 30 quid per head for the 700 mile return trip from Grimsby. Plus food and a gift I am looking at £200 per person, I think the main issue is the accommodation costs. I really don't want to let her down but have no idea how I can afford to go. So what Im asking is has anyone been in this situation before and/or have any smart accommodation solutions!?

Cheers in advance, Sam

When is it and how long have you know?

What i try and do for events, holidays etc is put a few quid aside each month from the date I know about the event.  That way its not one big hit

Being a student, simply don't go out as often

Agree. Stay a Friday and Saturday night in and the money you save stick it in the wedding fund.

You could always go the hippie way and stay in a van or go camping somewhere.

There is a John Fowler caravan park in Widemouth Bay. The walk to Crackington Haven is a tough one sober - so I suggest a shared taxi would be sensible. But it might give you options on accommodation that beats a hotel.

Don't discount B&B either. That can be had for £17 a night for a reasonable place. Bude is another 3 miles away but worth a look.

It was a long time ago, but now I remember - there is a bus that goes between Crackington Haven and Widemouth Bay. The walk there was so tough the ex and I got the bus back instead of walking...

could always rent a camper. my sister and her bf rented a splitty for around £70 for a wedding that was in the middle of nowere and everyone was camping. you could get 4 people in so bout £20 each.

this one may not be as prefered but its free. saw it on a program my mum was watching earlier. basically you put your house up on the website and then veiw other peoples houses, then once youve picked the house you message them saying you want a weekend holiday in that area and you like there house, if they like yours then you do a swap for a weekend compleatly foc. http://www.homelink.org.uk/

also depending on when the wedding is, most universities rent out there halls for really cheep during the time students arent in, i remember someone i know getting a 5 bedroom halls house with 2 bathrooms, living room and kitchen between about 5 of them for less than £20 a night

just dont tell them and hope you have a bedroom when you come back

could always just illegally camp? if it really is in the middle of nowere then i doubt the police will even know your there. me and my mates have done it loads of times, few tents, few crates a bit of wood scavanged from around the area. set all the tents up and a little fire ready for when you get back then once you get back get the fire going, you will have light and then you can sit up having a few beers untill everyones ready to go to bed.

Just found a campsite for £6 pp pn with hot showers, running water and stuff. I am willing to spend 6 quid for a shower haha. I have worked it out including a £50 big shop for the 4 of us and it should be £95 all in. May just be sorted

Haha, I imagine my gf wouldn't be 100% cool with sleeping in some cornish farmers shed for the sake of saving 6 quid
