Title: Big bumpers on early 16v
Post by: beechymonza on 04 June 2012, 11:18
I have read on here a few times that big bumpers on early 16v look crap,
Is this everyones opinion or just a minority,
As i have had them on my 88 for 12 years now, They were on when i bought it and i think it looks ok 2 be honest,,

Not a fan. Might be original parts but the reg plate just make them look odd?  :undecided:

It's your car - So It only matters what you think & Don't give a feck what other people think...

IMO - As Long AS It's Done Properly With OEM Stuff - It's Cool....

Type 19's just don't look good with BB's fitted...

Another point to note is that 88 & 89 cars are sort of the in-between-er's....

In between what I call proper Small Bumper & proper Big Bumper cars, as they have the CE1 Loom but fitted with CE2 spec Big Boss Steering Wheels & Columns with the Big Stalks, also big boss wiper mech's from a CE2 spec, so as such they are a miss match as they left the factory...

There is a guy on here who has a BBM think it's either a 88 or 89 spec that left the factory with Big Bumpers fitted & BBM's are supposed to be 90 spec cars....

So who can say 100% it's not a factory spec!!

Just tried to find some pic's of the BBM but I can't - Bum...

I wouldnt say it becomes TAT when you see the reg,
You dont really see many MK2s about these days,
So when people see 1 that looks nice an clean,
They not gonna say, That looks like TAT cause its got big bumpers on it

Personally, I prefer big bumpers, but it has to have the smaller side trim and wheel arches to match...

I wouldn't think Tat....

To Me that is a must do.... But it means you need new arches as well as the side trim...

Jay,

The wing brackets you have are genuine items, the bumper brackets do not look genuine VW ones.

The bumpers brackets from VW look like these; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280882131008

Whats the metal bit then Ken?
So if I order a different bracket they all should fit right?
Thats whats troubling me the brackets dont look like any other brackets for sale?

I recon that the bumper brackets that you have are from non genuine ones, i've never seen ones like that before...

Does this bumper have a mould line down the black textured part at the corner?

No mould lines and yes I had suspicions the bumper was aftermarket, but its a good quality one, but brackets have me worried.

Maybe pictures if the bumper inner mounts will help to decide if geniune ones will go right in?

Looks like the configerations of those mounting tabs will go on the OEM ones looks like the bracket I have mounts only in two places you can see the rust dust on only two holes?

Im in too minds at the moment with mine, nearly managed to sorce all the parts to convert mine to 90 spec. mine is a 88 16v with a 20vt. ive got everything tucked into the bay for a stealthy look but idealy would like to move the intercooler low down into the big bumper mouth to free up some space for a big rad. I like the look of both but always had a soft spot for the 90 spec's.

For me the only time it wouldnt work if your not using the 'full' kit ie small sides etc and the doors are the 2 piece ones.

What you mean by the doors, Does this mean that if i get the  90 spec kit,
They wont fit because i have  88 doors

Yes....

Straight Plug in... I would check the condition of the paint under them 1st...

When doing a 90 Spec Conversion you need;

90 Spec Arches,
90 Spec Side Trim,
90 Spec Lower Sill covers with mounts.
Big Bumpers (Front & Rear) with new Wing Hangers.

Yeah the paint should be ok, As its being fully stripped and painted as we speak,
I already got the big bumpers on it,
it just had the pre 90 spec side trim and stuff,
