Drove to scotland today to test drive a Golf R in rising blue with DSG, 4 hours driving for dissapointment!!! The car was a 2010, dealer told me it was in mint condition, bonnet had stonechips and light scratches on it, leather interior looked as though it had been cleaned with something that didn't agree with it, 1st service only done at 23K, cill plates 1 of them had a dent in it, passenger side seat had a loose piece on the back of it at the bottom( done by someone getting out of the back i assume )
The test drive was awful, it felt as if the DSG didn't know what gear it wanted to be in !!! it was very slow to react and by the time it did it was too late !! it was nothing like the s-tronic that i had on a previous S3 i owned 2 years ago. also the way it drove wasn't a patch on the GTI i was going to part ex for the R, you'd think it had 129000 miles instead of the 29000 on the clock.
If i look at another one it'll be a manual.

That is very disappointing sounds like this is a duffer. Don't dismiss the DSG as I have never experienced the issues you had with any DSG box I have used in a GTi,R32 or R. Try another R it should be as you describe. DSG is the single best option on an R as it consistently better at getting the best out if the car.
-
I test drove a used R recently and was a little disapointed with the power but i thought the DSG was the best thing about it! I know Sundaydriver has upgraded to a brand new one and am curious about a comparison? It may well be that the cars we've test driven were just dogs!
-
If I was to buy another mk6 then I would go for a high spec ed35 over an R.
Bloody hell they have the prefect spec one for me at my local dealer...... Ummmmm

Sounds like the car is the issue not DSG overall. I have DSG and think it reacts too fast! not too slow.

Yes get a manual, you can tootle round at slow ish speeds in a manual and still enjoy it, only advantage with a dsg is if you are going flat out against a $hit manual driver and some say if you are in a lot of traffic all the time if which was the case i wouldn't be buyng a R/GTI in the fist place. I surpose aswell if you only have one leg they are handy.
Oh no its a DSG v Manual thread
-
Thanks for the comments, to be honest i'd paid £500 deposit over the phone before i even got there so confident was i that the car was for me !! the other issues with paintwork and interior i was prepared to live with (it is after all a second hand car) but the test drive left me cold.
I am going to test drive a newer DSG and a manual just to make sure.
Is it also the fact that the GTI i have is just so good anyway ? i was hoping the R would be a huge step up ! maybe not.

If you test drive a DSG for only a short time I'd recommend using S mode or even better M mode (with the paddles) and keep the revs up

Agreed D is useless for anything other then fuel economy,
S will be ready in any condition
Manual will change exactly when you want it....
Anything not like the above the gearbox will be f**ked,
The R is a bigstep up if driven properly, it catapults out of corners leaving the gti dreaming it could follow.
-
DSG boxes require a service at 40,000 miles. Mines booked in for the this month. My DSG has been fine. Be interesting to know what the service involves and see if it makes any noticable difference.

Manual will change exactly when you want it....
...as long as it decided you want it too, you don't hit kickdown or you don't decide to 'manually' choose a gear that it disagrees with.
DSG is not for everyone.
You either love it...or hate it...and never the twain shall meet.

I know where theres a brand new R if your interested in black looks the business, they also have an ed35 in white

I've got a manual R so can't comment on DSG but can comment how different the R is to the GTI as having owned 2 MK6 GTI's and a Golf R.
IMHO, no bullsh!t about the R is better than the GTI etc etc. The first thing i noticed when driving home from collecting the R is the ride is a lot firmer, especially on the 19" talladega's, it feels more planted and responsive BUT it also feels a lot heavier, where the GTI feels nimble and light. The traction and grip on the R wins hand's down on the GTI, especially round corners.
Power delivery on the R is also different, it's not as smooth as the GTI. Where the GTI's torque is immediate the R's especially under 2500rpm's is hesitant. All of a sudden there's nothing then its whooooosh your away BUT over 2500rpm's its a different animal.
MPG there's a BIG difference, if you do a lot of miles your gonna have a big fuel bill. I use mine as a weekend car as i have a daily driver so fuel bills don't bother me as such. Insurance, the GTI cost me £350 per year compared to £500 on the R fully comp.
Look's wise IMO there's no better looking Golf than a rising blue R on 19" Talladega's. Xenon's are fantastic. I've never had them before and would'nt spec a car without them now.
If your expecting "A HUGE STEP-UP" i'm afraid your going to be dissapointed. For me the R is a great car but so is the GTI to be honest!, they are different in their own ways and it depends what you want out of a car. I love my R and don't regret changing for one minute!

Great write up, it does fit with my short experience tbh although i still suspect the one i drove had seen better days.
thanks mate.

thank you for this, nice to read a well balanced comparison.

Sundaydriver could not be more right, I had an R and sold it and now have a 35 after briefly living with a diesel, the R is harsh to live with, most of my driving is on B roads which with rock solid suspension and 19 inch wheels with rubber bands as tyres does your back in over a period. Also on a long run you get out feeling slightly exhausted as if you have just completed a couple of stages. The thirst of the R can be brutal especially when thrashed. All round for me is back to a GTI and the 35 has a great spec. It has to go in next week to get the alignment set as it is currently out, so will test the handling when I get it back..

I used to feel like this in the CTR trek up to Manchester from London I was completely worn out high revving motor!! I do think you have the best of both worlds in the ED35

I take it that car was at an independent dealer not a VW dealer? Sounds like a real dog that hasn't been looked after and you shouldn't touch it with a barge pole imo. It could even be stolen/recovered. Also the DSG should be pin sharp, sounds like that's got problems also. If you are foolish enough to buy it at least run a data check first.

Good right up Sunday driver , it gave me something to think about ?? i'm considering getting an R ??

I think it's mainly just an oil change ... it should feel a bit smoother after the service, based on peoples experiences with the Mk V

Ahhh that's Crewe VW for you. I hate that company with a passion. Unfortunately they're my local dealer who I no longer deal with!!!
-
Crewe vw what a load of t**ts, the car was sold before it even came to the dealership !!! Why lie then ?? Saying to me that I could have first look when it came in to them ! Rang them yesterday and spoke to different salesman. Why can't they just say its sold but if it falls through we will ring you !!
Main dealers seem to play these silly games all the time.
Oh by the way the blue golf r was at a jaguar dealer in Scotland and it was on pistonheads before that, the guy was putting the golf r in for part ex at the jag dealer when I rang the day before. He had the golf up for sale for 2 weeks at a higher price but no takers so he gave jaguar my number and said I was interested in it.

Mate the amount of trouble I've had with that dealership (and the company which owns them) is unreal. I posted about it here: http://www.staffs-vw.co.uk/staffs-dealers-your-say/1860-crewe-volkswagen.html

Read your post on that forum Scott, bloody heck mate  can't believe a professional business like a car dealership wud leave such sensitive info just lying about...
And with regards to that numpty who had a go, I bet he was the one that left that paperwork lying about...otherwise why wud he of blown up at you as soon as he saw you! I hope he got disciplined at the very least...have you received any sort of compo for the agro?

In their defence, they have put up blinds now, however they left them open the other day when I was passing and I could see more paperwork. I happened to notice a nice message was written in the dirt on a Polo GTI for sale on their forecourt - don't know who did that?    I seem to recall, although very vague, it was something along the lines of that particular dealership being a bit rubbish.
Nah I didn't get anything off them - nor did I expect anything. I'd previous had problems with other companies owned by the same parent company as Crewe VW. In fact, I'd taken them to director / Audi UK level too. I always said I'd NEVER use them again for anything, but I thought different dealership, may be better, boy was I wrong!!! I don't understand how companies like this can still be in business - or even worse, opening/buying new dealerships and making ever increasing profits. Surely I'm not the only person they fcuk over!
-
.......... however, one day I am sure that the people involved will get what they deserve..... karma and all that
