1.6 diesel/1.4 is probably the only ones he could get insured on I'd guess.  :undecided:

To be honest, when starting out like your son, anything for a lower premium is worth trying.

When my daughter wanted to drive, the cheapest car to insure and be safe enough in was a 1.0ltr Yaris. Anything VAG came back at silly money.

Tis true, google the cheapest motors to insure for young uns' and its Corsa/fiesta/Yaris territory. Polo is even more as its 'more expensive to repair' unfortunately.

I know its french but the peugeot 206 is pretty reasonable to insure, i insured my daughter on the missus 206 with Kwik-fit for just under £1400.

That is a good effort. Tiny cars FTW with for young drivers.

2k isnt bad for a first years insurance for a 17 year old.
the cheapest i got when i was 17 was £3000 on a 1.3 toyota starlet (actually cheaper then all the 1.0L corsas' polos' etc)
sadly you just have to take it to the chin the first year, my premium literately halved on my second year (1550)
The "black boxes" are bad things as the company have the right to constantly change your monthly premium depending on everything from mileage to acceleration, speed g forces in corners pretty much everything so all he has to do to sky rocket his insurance is go over 70 once and everyone knows as much as he says he wont....he will. sadly we all know driving as 80 isnt dangerous if you have the ability and confidence to do so as all modern cars are designed to travel and stop from quicker then that compared to cars when the 70mph speed limit was introduced.
so personally i would stay away from the black boxes and one fast corner or speed not to their liking and the got you by the b@lls  :undecided:

You got no chance, im 19 - passed in December last year (so I was 18, late bloomer haha) and the insurance on my 1.4 ABD MK3 was £3500 - and that was the lowest of the low under third party, not even fully comprehensive, how your getting quotes for £2000 is pretty amazing to be honest. I stuck my mum on the insurance which brought it down considerably but it really is a case of building some no claims.

My insurance quote for the same car in December upon renewal is £1100 fully comprehensive - hence why I have hopefully just bought a MK3 8V GTI in Gun Metal which is £2000 fully comprehensive or £1400 third party.

Goof luck searching mate!

Im 17, and a girl, but i just insured my 1.4 litre petrol mk3 Golf at £800 for a provisional and then it goes up to £1000 when i pass, i have two parents as named drivers, and less than 5k a year. This was without any alarms fitted and just kept on a drive over night, this was also fully comp and social, domestic and commuting, i went on compare the market and Admiral and Diamond are by far the cheapest!!

Keep looking, dont just settle on one, my first quote was £3500!

get your lad one of the toyota aygo/107/c1, group 1 insurance, £20 tax for the year, economical! fair enough he will still get stung on the insurance but at his age he has no option but to stomach it
