metal coolant pipe runs round the block , from water pump to heater matrix also connect to oil cooler and header tank.
50p says it's rusted out

Arhhhh bugger big job to change over ?

How could that have been "just noticed"!!!

Mine was bodged like that as well. Not a terrible job to do but id recommend taking the oil filter off. The hose claims on the oil cooler are a PITA.

Brilliant only had the golf a week and every day a difrent problem the funs of haveing a old car

Be wary of some of the aftermarket pipes though. When I was changing various hoses on mine I thought i'd change the coolant pipe along with everything else. I bought one off the link above from Tierod back a few months ago and another from GSF. In both cases I couldn't get them to fit properly. The angles were very slightly off, and the outlet to the oil cooler was located slighlty more to the right on the new pipe and was in the way off the oil filter once installed. I was lucky and my original pipe only had some surface rust so I derusted, sanded and painted it, but if your buying a pipe keep in mind you may need to mod or bend it slighlty. This happened with both pipes, don't know if I was just unlucky or if they are very slighlty off.

Just make one out of copper!
Just to let anyone know the corrado water pipe on the 16v looks nearly close, but the expansion tank pipe needs to be longer to reach the shorter outlet.
Basing this on the Golf 16V 90 spec.

i got a replacement pipe from vw heritage about 18 months ago . . . i didn't fit it, but seems fine

hahahahahha welcome to late 80s car ownership

Just fitted a new pipe obtained from the link I posted previously. A pig to do but it does fit OK. Remove the oil filter as advised earlier to make it easier though.

Brilliant thanks for that il put it on my list to do,s :)

I personally wouldn't bother with trying to replace the metal coolant pipe. I had the exact same issue with mine after I bought it about 5 months ago (16v) Except mine wasn't held together with a sleeve, it was held together with limescale and crust!
Check out my build thread:

I spent some time measuring and buying replacement rubber and silicone pipe plus T-pieces and then routing it roughly the same way around the front/side of the block. It looks much, much better now, no coolant leaks and I don't have to worry about replacing it again soon after the 2nd hand one I bought rusts through too! That's my recommendation, anyway!

Pattern 8v is available though i understand the 16v isnt

I had this pipe go in the same place too a couple of months ago, it cost me about 75-80 quid to get replaced in the garage,
