Title: My New Cabrio
Post by: dubstar9 on 30 May 2012, 21:28
Hello all, I have just returned to the Golf scene after about 10 years (kids, sorry!!!) as my last one was a sweet '90 spec Steel Blue Mk2 GTi 8v.

I'm back now with a Mk3 Avant Garde 2.0i 8v (god it's slow, but will sort that in time with a 24v lump) which I have just ordered a red mohair hood and next month it'll get slammed. It has a few faults of which I've posted question on this forum, namely N/S/F window not working off that doors switch and you need to press the drivers one down, then up and then down again to work, fine when you need it to go up again. It also has a electrical problem with the hood motor, I have tested the motor off the car and working fine, power and switch power to the relay, replaced relay and still not working (relay not clicking with power to it).

Since I got the car some low life has keyed both sides, so I have decided later to respray it Porsche Carrera White to contrast against the red hood and will find some sweet alloys in red too. Thinking about smoothing the bumpers and fitting textured side skirts to flow between the VR6 chin spoiler and the textured lower part of the rear bumper. Things I've done so far is started to replace the Blue interior parts with Black, fitted a glovebox instead of the parcel shelf, VR6 chin spoiler, bits of chrome (before being keyed) which may get ditched later and removed the rear badges and found out someone superglued them on!!! So I have rubbed down that panel ready for the respray

Looks a good sound base car

Just for info GTI spec skirts will not fit due to the sills being a different shape.

Post by: dubstar9 on 30 May 2012, 21:47
Looking at these skirts - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190661093078?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_2073wt_1037

Oh and I swapped GTi arches and mouldings for GL ones, they are quite hard to find too!!!
Title: Re: My New Cabrio
Post by: Wayne on 30 May 2012, 23:50
They look ok but will not fit yours, cabrio has deeper sills to add strength.
Title: Re: My New Cabrio
Post by: dubstar9 on 31 May 2012, 07:28
Ok  Think I'll just have the stone chip removed like most modded Cabrio's I've seen, then have stone chip film added once it's had the respray.

Now the next question is........should i fit a Mk4 bootlid???

Not a mk4 as such, the mk3.5 was a mk3 made to look like a mk4, everything on the the rear was different so I don't think it will fit a early one like yours.

Post by: dubstar9 on 02 June 2012, 10:04
Don't think you can fit Mk3.5 rear bumper, but I have seen mk3.5 bootlid fitted as shown below.

Post by: dubstar9 on 05 June 2012, 14:16
The Cabrio motor is ALIVE!!!

Would you believe that it was down to one of the Contact Sensors shown in the wiring diagram I found had become disconnected, they sit in the trim that surrounds the hinged area at the top of the rear side door cards (you know where the rear side window is). Spotted it wasn't connected at the bottom of the trim by the rear seat base, bet someone had removed the trim and didn't notice the small wire connector there. Plugged it in and tried the switch and heard the motor straight away, result

Post by: dubstar9 on 15 June 2012, 18:10
Well now that the motors work the next thing on the list was to ditch the tatty old PVC hood with a Red Mohair one.

So booked today off but still went in to use a bay in the workshop, not to bad a job. Main problems was the rear window, took ages getting out and all the staples in the window frame, same story fitting it back in.

But here we go.....

Yeah, defo.

Seen loads done in the US so thought I'd do a Vento front and US spec too, it's a great look

Talking of which I have fitted bumper marker lights this afternoon.

The spring in the light holds them in place against the bumper bracket.

I have some yellow LED's that will be running lights in the front indicators that just need wiring in very soon, wish I could wire the bumper marker lights up so they are on with the running lights but then flash with the indicators :undecided:

It must be possible because US cars have their tail lights on and then one flashes as an indicator while the other stays lite!!! :undecided:

Post by: dubstar9 on 12 July 2012, 21:22
Fitted the US Spec front bumper today, ok it's not finished but the rest of the bodywork isn't yet so what the heck!!!

Need a new splitter as my VR6 one is to short, so lift the one it came with on, also found two brackets that will work for my floating number plate. Need to primer and tidy up around the marker lights, but all in all you get the idea.

I got my Mohair one from this guy - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/J-C-AUTOMOTIVES?_trksid=p4340.l2563

He does PVC also in different colours and fitting took my around 5 hrs with simple tools and would be far easier to do by yourself than trying to replace the complete hood and frame and from £109 for the basic cover you won't better a brand new item with a cheaper secondhand one.

This is the company he supplies for and the one I fitted - http://www.car-hood.co.uk/

Something like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaTvlI4W3bs

But I'd rather have the whole top lift up which will make it alot neater as the shell of the bootlid seals the boot and makes it water tight. Thinking about using a MK3.5 top so I have a brake light too.

Just done the black last night at 10.30 with the flood lights on, no wind at all.

Well the dye is on order so should be to long and then I'll give it a rub with leather sealer, then on the look out for leather 3 door front seats and leather Beetle hoop headrests. Think finding the door cards will be harder but I'll grab them when I see them, might need some Cabrio colour concept ones and dye the the red bits above the arm rests black so only the arm rest are red on a totally black door card. Then get the door handles and door pull surrounds covered in red leather. ;)

Anyway, just fitted door and main dash switches, green for red lite and swapped the blue Airbag for a black one.

Switch on the left is the Corrado spoiler one and looks crap (so new blank needed) which I have the Corrado bezel, so I'll fit it into the replacement black dash between steering wheel and drivers door under main light switch ;)

Booked the day off today to fit the coilovers and replace the O/S lower arm as that N/S one needs booking in for a pro to sort.

Anyway, with a 45mm drop at the rear and a 60mm drop at the front I have a bit of rubbing which I put down to the 17"s and the fact the arches need rolling which I'll get done to the replacement front wings.

Cheers mate.

That N/S arm is bugging me at the moment, had the tyre replaced today and as they torqued the wheel up you could see it moving back 10mm or more and after a good drive it knocks like hell over potholes and rough surfaces

Got it booked in at the same garage in a couple of weeks to replace the bolt, then I can get on and replace the arm, free of the track rods and book her in for tracking. Then I'll be 100% happy with the suspension and once the wings are welding up and the arches rolled it's sorted.

I can focus on finished the interior (Black dash and kick panels and leather front seats) and the bodywork, that spoiler/bootlid and a respray
