Title: oh dear....
Post by: [han] on 10 June 2005, 16:16
oh dear! the golf ain't as good as expected!!!
just cleaned my golf for the first time (had it a month) but as it's a non runner it's been sat on the drive. It wasn't particularly clean when it arrived as it had been stood for 3 months!
Poor car.... where do i start? all mechanical things have been done for m.o.t (it took 3 attempts to pass) now its just purely cosmetic matters!

Does anyone know what the black stain is that runs from the lower corners of the boot? i've seen this on quite a few golfs. Can i get this off? i managed to rub one side off with a sponge, but it's left a shiny mark on the lacquer - atleast the black's gone, but on the other side it' really thick, and well stuck on, there are a few scratches in it, where i can see the paint but don't really 3want to scracth it off!

my back bumper is a poor, but acceptable - there is a brownish mark that will not come out - so this may be an excuse for big bumpers    Anyoneknow roughly what a set of big bumpers for a  mk2 will cost?

Rust spots - how do i remove them (get them removed probably... don't want to break a nail), decently and cheaply, they're only small, apart from one larger bit on the bottom of a rear door

Clutch - the clutch is really high so im guessin i need a new one, any ideas of the cost for one of those?

I'm sorry bout all the questions, but i usually rly on ym dad for this kind of info, but him and my mumare away for the weekend (again!!! - they're away about 50 weekends a year!)

Hope you can help me! - i know you bright sparks can!

try white spirit on the black marks from the boot.

Black you bumpers and other plastic trim with scuff cote shoe polish

The only way to remove rust spots is to get them down to bare metal, treat it with rust preventor and respray the areas.

for the black marks, its wax from inside your boot, pour a kettle full of hot water on it and they'll melt off, look in the cosmetics section of this forum for tips on getting bumpers black again. big bumpers can be found on ebay or www.gsfcarparts.com or www.eurocarparts.co.uk

That's two cars of mine that are non-runners at the mo and i've got a LOVELY  :undecided: 05 reg chevrolet matiz from the insurance cop with 3000 miles on the clock, so i've been ragging it everywhere to make me feel better. but its not quite the same..... if the clutch doesnt slip then your fine for now. save the cash and get some big bumpers

Use your hairdryer (girls=hairdryer / guys=heatgun ) to heat the black plastic suround around the rear window and then peel it off.

Replacing the clutch cable is cheap, the cable itself will cost less than £20.
The clutch itself would be more like £100.

the boot mess is the wax they put inside to stop it rusting. it melts on very hot days and runs :(

Or maybe its because MK2's are held together with a mixture of plasticine and wood glue..

And when they moved onto the mk3 they decided a fully welded hull, like the liberty bells, was the way forwards

The barnacles also hold the bow together quite nicely on my mk3

Shiver me timbers! They are held together with caulking on large barges like the Mk 3!

Was something about clutches i read a while back, was something about auto adjusters jamming up and the way to sort it - but cant remember where or how long ago it was!

Sorry!

You will need to get someone to check as cables varied across the board for the 1.6-1.8 engines.

There should be a cable leading down to the right side (as you look at it) attatched to a bracket then a little cable coming past it into a white plastic adjustable part. (that is the adjuster)

If it isn't there then it is a auto adjust, simply remove the cable and then re-attatch it then pump the clutch pedal a few times.

If it is then you need a couple of spanners and a spare pair of feet. To play around with the adjuster on the cable.
