Hi there. Just thought I'd introduce myself first - recently acquired 2010 GTI Mk 6 DSG in hand. Boredom in the other.
I've been doing some reading around tuning options. My previous ride was a 350Z with 313bhp and rear wheel drive. I know it's not really a comparison but I feel the GTI is definitely missing something. Especially at the top end.
Between ABT, APR and Revo - who would provide the best package? If I have missed any other major supplier out feel free to add.
Many thanks
-
Revo all the way mate...not gone there myself but all the reviews are very good, and theres plenty on here that wud recommend them.
Why the change from the 350Z? That's a fair bit of power to lose...
Oh yeah, Welcome(http://www.websmileys.com/sm/fingers/fing31.gif)

Non of the above , heard bad things on here about Revo !!.... Use the Doc forum Mod brilliant.

I wouldn't, it will show up on a service and VW will void your warranty.

4 replies and all pretty much cancelled out by second opinions. Except for APR?
Ideally I would like a switch as there is still a year left under warranty.
Mr GTD: Practicality and economical issues forced me to change. I used to live in London by myself. Now I'm in the Midlands with family. I had a few run ins with GTI's on the streets of London while I had my Z (as you do) and I was impressed by their 'real world' ability. They're pretty hard f*****s to shake off!

Superchips blue fin is excel t on the GTI. They're on special at the minute for £360 with a free panel filter from demon Tweeks too

in fairness there are pros and cons to all the mapping out there and you choice should be made on what you want out of the car and proximity to agent/dealers etc and whether you want one that is switchable
i ran a 2.0tsi rocco all be it a manual which was mapped for over 50k and never had any issues the three dealers i have used
end of the day you makes the choice, i was really under whelmed by one companies offering recently having done 20 miles in it and actually preferred the stock Ed35 lol
wrong to comment on the customer service of the three players as i have tended to deal direct and in some instances friends have not got the same level of service (and their associates) which is one of the reasons i am going down a different route on certain elements of the Ed35

Have to admit I thought I was set on a Revo map, but having read lads of different reviews now not sure whether to consider APR or Superchips
-
I agree the GTI needs a map.
I decided against Revo as I think it's too much aggresive power for what I wanted. I have Superchips and it's very linear but a massive improvement.

+1 for Superchips, delivers like OEM but so much more mid range grunt, really smooth and not surging like some others have reported with other maps.

They are good so long as the ECU is not locked

I have Revo stage 2 on mine but if I was doing it all again I would go with APR. had a few issues with the REVO stage one map. These have been sorted by REVO now but still kind of puts me off. Plus APR have much more options available if you feel the need to go further than stage two!

Not any more they aren't...
One of the local VW dealer Techs has just got his new GTI and it has a locked ECU.

My understanding is that late 2010 GTI's & GTD's are locked off in the ECU's !!

no just the VAG TDI170 engine is locked

As I said above...one of the local VW Techs is a proper enthusiast and has just picked up a new 2012 GTI, and started to modify it...and his is locked.
He can't get it to take a re-map without sending the ECU to them.
He's tried.
He did the work on my GTI at it's 2nd service and was telling me when I picked it up...I have no reason to doubt him.

The Doc can perform open heart surgeary on the ECU, works a treat and you would never know, I know because ive seen him do it

And test driven it no doubt?

APR can unlock ECUs. Mine is a US Spec GTI and they unlocked it. The ECU has to be removed.
Expect ALL VWs to have locked ECUs in FY12-13

strange
mine is august 2011 build and wasn't locked so it but be very recent. i was talking to the parts lad at pulman VW the other day and they bluefin GTI's and never mentioned them being locked though they won't map a TDI as the ECU has to come out.
-
^ Which one Durham or Sunderland? Are they seem ok as must get my slight oil leak weep looked at (Not been using the GTI past few weeks so have not hurried myself :embarassed:)
-
i go to the one in durham now. sunderland will NEVER touch my car again.
the durham branch is totally different. much more professional and a nicer showroom/workshop in general.
i asked about modifications affecting warranty and servicing and they said as long as a part didn't specifically cause a problem they're not bothered.
they do bluefin there anyway so definitely not bothered about that.
-
Pardon my ignorance but what the frik is a Doc forum mod?
-
FYI mine was built Feb 2012 reg'd March 2012 and the ECU wasn't locked - much to my surprise!

The Doc aka Craig is a moderator on this section of the forum (along with Snoopy) and owns Carbon chip tuning! Take a look in here and all will become clear!

Maybe very recent then?
His is an April/May 2012 car.

Spoke to Pulman Durham last week and they said they wouldn't be able to just map it. They'd do the cat back exhaust and an air filter as well for £1500. Is that a good price? I'd like to have just the map done if possible.
-
they're having you on there.
they can do the stage 1 package or do it in sections
i did mine myself using bluefin, milltek non resonated cat back (same as VWR they use just different tail pipes) and a panel filter and all in it was about £900 so cheaper do do it yourself really
-
Mkviken, but you did not buy the vwr premium taxed package with the certificate and free fitting.
Think vwr now use ITG panel filter and Revo map in their kit now.
-
Free fitting! They wanted £650 for VWR springs fitted! What a joke.
Yeah I think it is ITG they use. I got a pipercross one but TBH a panel filter Make little or no difference anyway. They charge something daft like £90 for it.
Not sure which map they use now. Heard different things on forums etc but the lad at Pulman the other day said they did superchips?
-
if it was me... i would go to someone who knows about the engine you are remapping.
on here the doc and r-tech would get my vote. cant beat a custom map for your own car. much better than going with the genric likes of revo/superchips etc etc :nerd:
Atleast with these guys you get full support after you have paid your monies, rather than passed on to a head office

i'd assume it would be APR maps now
