I intend at some point in the next couple of months to replace my rear discs, pads and I thought I might as well replace the calipers for Mk3 ones due to the seizing issues that crop up, this has already happened to my Golf before I owned it and from reading on here it can happen again and again it seems.
So are they are a straight swap?
Also should I just stick with stock VAG discs and pads or do you guys recommend I pick something else up that isn't overly expensive ;)
I've read the sticky in terms of changing rear calipers and discs but I don't get an idea of how difficult it is. I haven't properly worked on a car for 10 years since my very first Mk1 Fiesta and even then I didn't do that much so please assume i'm a complete newbie to this.
Any links, guides etc and info you guys could provide me would be much appreciated :)
Edit: I've read a thread lower down on mk3 calipers and i seems I need a late Mk2 handbrake cable and post 95 mk3 calipers but I still need advice on the rest :)

if your replacing the rear disks then you need wheel bearing also. not a particulary trick job. for rear disks i would just use std items

Thanks mate, any idea on costs of the wheel bearings, discs, pads and calipers roughly?
Should I get these from a VW dealer?

have a look at www.gsfcarparts.com for wheel bearings etc, they also do zimmerman discs which have good reviews and not too pricey.

I read from time to time about this option on changing the rear calipers for Mk3 items, anyone running post 88 car the rear calipers part numbers are the same for both the Mk2 & 3 models.
Prices are as follow,
£75.75 + vat rear calipers each VAG
£19.00 + vat rear pads each VAG
£24.83 + vat rear discs each VAG
£16.12 + vat rear wheel bearing each VAG
£271.40 exc vat
£318.90 inc vat
Gstar Price £287.01 inc vat

afaik if you're running a <'88 mk2 you'll need to put >'88 handbrake cable on too as the original isn't long enough.
If anyone could write a properly how to guide it would be helpful to so many :)

I too am embarking on this project , going to be replacing the mk2 rear calipers for mk3 items from a Golf Gti. I have sourced rear calipers from
www.vws.me.uk for £25 each.
Now, couple of questions as per the top one , are these calipers literally a straight swop ????
What is the process of doing this as i have never done before, i.e. Bleeding brakes etc...

straight bolt off / bolt on job if yours is a 90 spec mk2.
Change the handbreak cables while your at it. They are cheap and easy to do.
you have to bleed the breaks from the furthest caliper away from the servo first. rear left, rear right, front left, front right

Thanks , have purchased all items ... awaiting delivery and things are going on next week.
New front discs and pads / mk3 calipers / rear pads / handbrake cables / fluid
i shall be taking photos of the endevaour ....

just a bit of extra info
late 88+ mk2 golfs had the same rear calipers as early mk3 golfs, you want late mk3 rear calipers with the internal handbrake mechanisms

95/96 was change over to 288mm N plate ish
