just got a mk3 gti 8v, and i need some ideas on how to get more power out of it? cams? engine maintenance and all that stuff as im new to the golf?? cheers guys any inputs good input,
-
The 2.0l 8v is not really worth spending money on. You will put probably £1000 into it before it's even got half a chance of beating a 16v.
But if you insist, a high lift cam, a modified airbox with a panel filter and cold air intake, exhaust and a good service will get you 135ish hp. Mine had got 138hp with the above, but it had nothing on a 16v.
-
Here's a tip : accept it for what is, slow
-
As said already. People don't buy 8v's to make them faster. They buy them as a car to make look good.

Lol
Best bet is to buy something faster.
-
As above can make small gains with panal filter, exhaust, uprated leads, 4 branch ect but won't make massive diffrence
-
Gutting the interior is probably the most effective modification on these for more speed.

Uprated leads will add nothing.
Nor will a 4 branch manifold.
A decent filter, modified airbox and re-map may give about 10 BHP at best...the rest will give nothing.
Same with a de-cat.

Or change the FD to a lower one, to make the best use of the power available.
Even better...lighten it AND change the FD.

I would not even spend the money getting it re mapped TBH.
The only engine mod on my old 8v was a K&N panel filter.
From previous experience on the rolling road days the power output on most 8v was usually between 110 - 125 BHP. The higher end of this was more to do with a well serviced engine.
Just enjoy the car for what it is, a good steady work horse/mule

This and try not to concentrate on speed as you can only go so fast in this country before you'll lose your licence and the 8v is more than capable of doing that.....clean,low,subtle is the way to go.

I want the speed as well coming from a 280bhp leon cupra r 225 but i just know the 8v wont get there so get it lower and with a nice exhaust and enjoy it round the twisties or put the money towards a vr or 16v

16v won't get near a cupra r and the vr comes with a heavy thirst so you'll need to think of transplants instead.
-
In all fairness no standard engined mk3 is going to touch a Cupra R in performance stakes, hence the reason im after one next.

I was looking at one in a garage the other day, awful lot of bang for your buck and a nice interior too.
-
Faster, newer, handles better, safer and even has isofix rear seats - i could be onto a winner with the missus here.

This
a L and B flywheel with something like a 3.9/4.2 FD will feel like £1000 worth of mods anywhere else.
You can scrape 150 out of an N/A 8v but in cash terms its not worth it, if your handy and do it for love + some quality shed time then anything is worth it like turbo conversions etc etc
If you just want more power for the traffic light derby and instant fun then buy another car as Mk3's aint that quick without serious work.
£3k gets you plenty of choice of 200 bhp plus cars or a classic hatch which is half the weight of today's equivalent

The seats are nice but they still seem a little bland inside to me, I looked at a few Cupra's before getting the Octavia, I still think the Octavia feels / looks nicer inside.

cheers for all the input fellas, il probably just slamm it to the floor! low and slow iiiiiiiiiite lol

Sounds like an ecu fault. It should only flash when the oil change or service 1+2 are due.
-
nice one mate, il get it plugged in and checked out tarrrrr

If you fancy a turbo then there are a few US. kits on Ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jetta-Golf-Passat-Beetle-Cabrio-MK2-MK3-MK4-2-0L-8V-SOHC-T3-T3-T4-Turbo-Kit-63-/200680023828?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb9762714

There is a way to reset the service indicator without plugging anything in, do a search for the procedure and try that first to see if it clears the fault.

Sound turbo kits lol Im looking for a 16v one.

thats some bold claims in that listing!
-
Doesn't mention anything to do with the internal mods needed to get these figures!!!
But 8v has a turbo kit and he mentions 230bhp - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z97IDjE2W8
Just spotted it's listed as a 1.8L, so must be a G60 block
-
look at the engine spec though its mental
-
I typed in my reg year 1996 and it said not compatible lol
-
Worth remembering that ebay turbo kits tend to be designed for the usa market also you really need to look at internal mods and lowering the compression.
