Title: mk5 headlight questions
Post by: tcyjohnny on 28 May 2012, 15:10
Hi all,
New guy here so please go easy on me. I have had my mk5 sport 1.6FSi for a year now, no major plans for it, it's just a daily driver to and from work.

Over the past year I have started to notice the top of headlights are getting foggy/yellow-ish (google revealed that it's do with the UV protection top coat breaking down over the years in the sun!) Anyone have had this problem resolved? I have heard of things like headlight restoring kit but have no idea how good/bad they are. Any ideas?

Second option is to get a pair of new headlights and will the angel eyes ones be too chavvy? I have seen these FK ones cheap: (by cheap I mean under £50?! and apparently for a pair?????!!! sounds too good to be true it seems)

Anyone else have them on their car and what do they think?

Thanks in advance.

There are quite a few headlight restoration kits that work. Basically, they rub down, then polish and buff up the surface of the lense. Other people have done them using progressively finer grades of wet and dry, and finishing off with compound applied with a machine polisher.

The problem is, is that the UV protection layer has broken down and gone cloudy and yellow. By restoring the light, you will remove the remains of the protection, meaning the bare lense underneath will go cloudy and yellow.

So it does look like my avoidance of getting a new pair of headlights can't last for much longer then.....

Anyone have the above FK automotive headlights fitted on their mk5? Any comments on them? Do they have the beam height adjuster included too? Comments from owners of the above will be great, thanks.
