Hello,
I changed the clutch a few weeks ago and the motor has been running fine since, however while driving home from work on saturday I heard a part fall off the car.
I have had a look underneth (nearside) and all I can see is a little gap as if a seal/large washer is missing where the driveshalt goes into the engine.
My Questions are.
1) Is this the part that I would need? http://www.gsfcarparts.com/311vg0020
2) Has anyone got a diagram of the driveshaft broken down.
3) Is it better to repalce the drive shaft while messing down there?
Cheers

Probably best to jack the car up and post a picture. I would hope that this part didn't fall off the car because the driveshaft should hold it on. If it's running fine then the noise could have been a tool left under the bonnet or something that was on the road. Not worth replacing a good driveshaft with good boots on if you can buy the part that may have fallen off separately. J

This thread is properly worthless without pictures.

if that seal was missing mate you would have gearbox oil everywhere
driveshaft hubs are held on by a circlip and washer which are behind a cap in the centre of hub, only accessible with inner cv joint removed, post a pic up

I will get a pic over the weeked!!
Suppose it will help.

Hi Guys,
Below are are the pictures if the drive shaft. As you can see it is loosing oil from where it meets the gearbox. The oil is not coming out when the car is standing still but looks to be loosing it when moving.
What do you think is wrong?

Can't tell from those pictures TBH but looks like the drive shaft / gearbox seal is finished which is why there is gear box oil everywhere its a drop out job and asses from there me thinks?

can be done with g/box in place look on brokevw.com for how to do it, you need a bit of 10mm threaded bar and nuts, 8mm thread long bolts and nuts, a 3 way harmonic gear puller, circlip pliers, and 22mm ID tube .
whip off the drive shaft, remove centre cap from flange, remove circlip holding on flange, using puller with the 8mm bolts pull off flange [it may pop off under spring pressure] .
then fit new seal making sure it sits straight [ its worth setting new seal about 2mm further out from original position so its not on wear point of flange]
then using 10mm threaded bar screwed into centre of spindle in g/box wind flange back on using puller, use nuts on threaded bar to wind back in, put circlip back on using the tube.
its explained on brokevw in much more detail with pics under drive flange removal,
as clipperjay said your seal is farked mate

Cheers for the info.
I will have a crack at it as soon as I can.
Ive noticed the stearing becomming less responsive over the lest two weeks, would this fit in with this problem? or would somthing like the stearing rack be at fault?

none of those you want a gearbox drive flange seal kit, which will have the seal, circlip and cap

+1
Check the output shaft for wear as we dont know how long its been like that, as grit and dirt could have go in there?
