Just had the car back from the dealer getting a few things looked at ...
- Bonnet release handle came off in my hand
- Clunk going from lock to lock
- Coolant leak
Bonnet release needs a cable and handle ordered, clunk allegedly is the exhaust needing adjusted, and I need a new water pump!
Car is a July 2010, so isn't even 2 years old and has done 20k. WTF is it with this 'so called' premium car?
So far, in a year of ownership I've had:
- Wind noise
- Excessive oil consumption
- RNS510 crash and fail to boot
- and the above three issues
All the VW fan boys will no doubt pour all over this - but in 3 years / 60k miles of ownership, my Focus ST had none of this nonsense. At 18k I had a creak in the clutch pedal which was the pedal needing a bit of grease - that's it!

Just had my Water Pump replaced as well.
I believe the MkV suffered from this as well so most cars have them changed with the cambelt at about 40k miles.
It was on back order so the garage had the car for 10 days.
Looks to me like a design defect.
Other than that my 2009 GTi has been perfect.

Made on a Friday afternoon sounds like you have a minger !! On my old ED30 which had the dreaded chirping noise on cold start which needed new cam tensioner yes big fairly big job but thats what your warranty is for :wink:

My water pump was replaced with a few hundred miles on the clock.

I believe the MkV suffered from this as well so most cars have them changed with the cambelt at about 40k miles.
Well you don't say which MkV you had but the MkV GTI the timing belt replacement is 120k or 4 years. The later GTI's have a chain.

IMO very little in the VW stable is premium, the GTI isn't a premium car in my view.

His signatures says Mk6 GTi but he's talking about the MKV problems with water pumps not Mk6.

No problems getting any warranty work done at the dealers for me, I don't even take it there for servicing, I always take my car to the indy Vw/Porsche specialists who take a lot more care of it,
IMO the main dealers are just glad of the work, never had any issues with warranty work on any of the cars I've had and I always mod them, some dealers may be different tho ?

My dealer mentioned the downpipe and ITG intake, but doesn't seem to have put them off replacing the pump! I was a bit nervous, but the chap was brand new.

IMO very little in the VW stable is premium, the GTI isn't a premium car in my view.

Then why price it that way? I could have bought 2x not very old Focus ST's for that money.

Neil can you get your car serviced at an indy workshop if you have 3 yrs free servicing ? :undecided:

^^ if you have a service package with the dealer, you will have to take it there,
I didn't take out any Maintanance package so you can take it to any approved VW garage and still get your full warranty, but any warranty work has to be done at the main dealers :smiley:

As I enter my 3rd week without the GTI, after its 2nd water-pump failure in 2 years (30,000kms) just wondering if the incidence of water-pump failures in the UK is an issue ? Apparently there are no water-pumps in Australia and have to wait for the parts to arrive from Germany. I like the irony of people down under promoting the reliability of German manufacturing.

Look at all the JD Power type reliability surveys. VW are only ever average mid table. Such surveys are always dominated by Japanese manufacturers who properly engineer their cars.
I also use a general motoring forum and there are countless examples of people on there complaining about VW, Audi, BMW etc. and very few about Honda, Toyota and so on. The Germans do well because the snobbish, class ridden UK market buys into this "premium German" thing which keeps second hand prices high. This is why I, as a private buyer, have gone back to VW even though all the Vauxhalls I've had have had far fewer problems than the VWs I've owned.
Remember that VW is a mass market manufacturer. It's only Britain that seems to think it's premium!

Its not only Britain, but Australia as well and the GTIs are priced accordingly. Even Skodas are promoted as a luxury Euro brand here,(not taking away from Skodas' product though) in fact anything made in Europe is a Euro prestige product.
I have read plenty of comments on the USA sites regarding the water-pump but not seen the same comments on the UK sites, hence the post.

I agree 100% with all those points but will also say that VW seems to be marketed as a semi-premium brand in a lot of countries now. My dad moved from Hondas and Nissans to VW because of 1) I'd always owned GTIs and SEATs and never had any problems with them (touch wood) and 2) He bought into the hype of 'reliable' VWs which VW has nurtured since the 80s when they were genuinely better engineered than other Euro brands.
Firstly my Dad bought a Jetta 1.8t which was 100% reliable and then against my advice bought a 1.6TDI Jetta which has been decidedly unreliable in the grand scheme of things. He's going back to Japanese next time. That says it all.
VW dealers are the worst for pretending they're a premium badge, they seem to think because there are waiting lists for most of the models they can treat customers with disdain and have become increasingly inflexible.
My local dealer used to be terrible but got a lot better over recent years but now have started to slip back into complacency and my father's local dealer is in Cornwall and they have no competition for miles. You can but imagine how arrogant that dealer has become. He's logging his problems and will be writing to VW about them very soon. VW need to wake up.
I'm going back to SEAT next time if I buy another newish car, but more likely will keep my mk6 for a good few years if it stays reliable and will go to trusted indies only.

My water pump failed after 300 miles but it was almost "unheard of" in the UK when I took it into the dealers and contacted VW UK. The second pump also made a few weird noises after a while but sorted itself out and it's not been an issue since.
