Spent more time on the golf today, so today I flushed the coolant then concentrated on that really bad smell I can't seem to get rid of
I noticed under the steering colum there's a pipe that leads to what looks like the back of the speedo that's leaking. Had the scuttle panel cover off and it passes through down to the gearbox and sits behind the clutch cable.
So I'm pretty sure this is my smell as its dripping down onto the steering colum and stinks
Question is what is this pipe and are they prone to leaking? Also the pipe was right down near the bottom of the engine and sure it should run on long the top.
Got 2moz off so cracking on with it wouldn't mind some advice please guys

That I am sure is your speedo cable.

It does look and feel more like a cable but its pi**ing oil from the back of the clocks. Does oil run to the back?
-
No but it can siphon it from the gearbox that would explain the smell
-
Take a picture of it and someone will tell you what it is!
Oil doesn't run to anywhere in the back... Shouldn't be running out the clocks for sure

I'd go with that, never seen it happen but gearbox oil smells disgusting and the speedo cable goes where you described....

Dam this doesn't sound good, so I've ran it along the top of the engine bay and with it hanging down before I'm thinking its dragging crap up from may be a previously over filled gearbox. This is so strange using my blackberry but I'll try getting a picture up 2moz. And yes its really smelly not pleasant to drive my mrs won't even get in the car with me :-(

There was a case on here before and thats what was happening, the cable was drawing up GB oil and peeing it all over the car...
I seem to remember it was the seal around the box and a new cable fixed it - BUT don't hold me to that do a search & you have to be careful when swapping the cable as there is a small part that can fall off into the box... I'm Not a Mechanic but it's what I've read....

try a new speedo cable and also check gearbox breather is clear [ small black cap infront of gear selector rod on gearbox ]
-
i havent had chance to look at this again yet but it really needs sorting, (your Right guys its the speedo cable)
with it being a nice day yesteday i swapped out the rear windscreen as the other was scratched to bits, not an easy job at all took 5hours to remove old one and replace for new one

I've had this before, the new cable I fitted sucked oil out the box, but first I knew was when it dripped onto my pedals! Very dangerous as you can imagine. As said before, check breather on box and oil level

did yours just turn out to be the breather hole blocked? I've noticed on mine there's no black cap covering it however this aside how do I go about checking looks clear from looking down from the top,

check the oil level if breather looks clear, undo large plug on the end of g/box, make sure your on level ground, you need 17mm allen key, put a container under hole and let oil drain until its level with bottom of hole
-
Don't know what mine was in the end, I just removed the cable and forgot about it. Wasn't long until the pony box blew apart anyway so I hydro clutch + 02a'd it

Worked on this issue today, I removed the speed cable from the gearbox end and inspected, removed plastic gear off the end of the cable and noticed the tiny o-seal ring had completely broken down.
So all intentions of getting a new cable I had a spare o-seal to replace this. Put this back together and will post up if any more leaks.
If this doesn't fix the problem i'm thinking of removing this and plugging up until the vr6 goes in.

new o-seal fitted to speed cable and its still pi88ing in the cabin, so next is the gearbox oil level, ive brought the 17m hex from shelfords (cheers guys)
now i can get to this nut from underneath so the process is to drain off until oil stops running out and that should give me the correct amount? obviously if its been over filled there should be oil running straight out?...until level with the bottom of the hole or does this drain off the whole box?
do i just nip up the nut after then all done?...

Undo the fill plug first obviously, as you don't want to drain it then realise the fill plug wont come out! If the oil pours out the fill plug, then thats when it will have been overfilled. When it stops draining there then its at the correct level. And obviously make sure its level on Axle Stands. Its a PITA trying to undo them when its just on stands though, its hard to get leverage on a breaker bar to undo them. You may need to soak the plugs for a couple of days in WD40/Plusgas.

cheers sean, stupid question is the fill plug on the side as well? having trouble locating it :undecided:

with car on ground turn wheels full left lock and then look behind and upwards at the front of passenger side wheel and you will see a large allen key plug on end of gearbox
