Title: Help! Car smoking like a goodun on boost!
Post by: JoelBu on 24 May 2012, 17:35
Hi,
I have a 1.8t with a Ko4 turbo,
About 2months ago I noticed a high pitched whistle noise whilst driving coming from the engine, there was no change in performance,
however for the last 2 weeks or so my car has started kicking out a hell of a lot of blue smoke whilst on boost,
the car is really undrivable now,
was just wondering if anyones got any advice?
I was thinking that the turbo is knackered, due to a previous boost leak somewhere?
Many thanks!

Sounds like the seals have gone in the turbo. Rebuilt/Replacement time.

just got a quote of £120 to replace the turbo at my local vag specialist, which i didnt think was too bad,

cheers.

Ko4's don't come on mk4's unless it's been put on. If its an AUM/AUQ it will be a ko3s for' sho

Yeh,
but i know the previous owner replaced the turbo, and im not sure whether it was to a k04 or ko3s??
damn my crap memory :P
the garage who are going to fit the new turbo have told me to source the turbo,
where would one find a turbo? i wouldnt mind getting a ko3s hybrid, but they're quite pricey no? (seen the jbs ones)

Hmm that doesn't sound like a bad idea at all, cheers mate, take it will get a better power return with that???
How much does a FMIC and exhaust system cost???

You should get around 270bhp I think.

The intercoolers are £500, exhausts are about £300 although R-Tech may be able to sort you out if your buying both and getting it mapped I dunno?

Unless you can fit it yourself it will be more than £1500

The cheap option would be a good K03s off eBay for about £250, new gaskets ect and your £120 fitting. It's up to you
