Title: Aaaaaaggggghhhhh bloooody cars
Post by: stainesy on 24 May 2012, 17:33
Its just one thing after another isn't it.
Fitted new belts today and planned to go pick up a middle and rear exhaust box as mine are buggered. Thought I would take a look unde the car at all my exhaust before I went for some reason and it's also blowing from somewhere between the cat and the engine now.
Everytime I fix something another thing apears. Sometimes I think why do I bother with these bloody cars.

So now left to do before I start making it pretty is
Rear arches welded
New exhaust from engine to the back
Rocker cover gasket
Need to buy a bolt extractor so I can FINALY change the rear wheel bearing
New sunroof
And what ever els decides to go.

Aaaaaaggggggghhhhhhh

Ok rant over.

Same here my exhaust had been blowing for a while so i go and buy a welder take exhaust off and it was a nightmare as its been made in one piece from the cat all the way back,i weld it put it back on and now i think the baffles have gone in the backbox.

Yeah my baffles abe gone in both my boxes. I took off the rear box and emptied the baffles out of it. But if you shake the middle box you can hear stuff rattling around inside. And now there is a blow on the downpipe somewhere or maybe the manifold. How to you get to the bloody manifold? It seems hidden.

I looked at taking manifold off my to replace with a fourbranch stainless and i think the best way is to remove inlet manifold but thats a bit of a job in itself.

Yeah it looks a pig of a job. Been looking at down pipes on eBay how come they only have 2 pipes?
Do they have a manifold then downpipe with springs on it? Could not find any manifolds just the downpipes with an odd springy end.

Yes the standard cast manifolds and downpipes are 2 seperate pieces, where as the stainless ones i was looking at are 1 piece

As long as you know one end of a spanner to the other you should be ok its just the manifold studs you have to be carefull of ie not snapping them

Oh that I'm fine with. Quite capable of drilling and retapping. It's just how do I get access to it? Do I have to take inlet manifold off?

I think that would be the easiest option yes as it gives you more room to both see and extract the manifold

Never done it on a golf but it looks like you need to get it up in the air, disconnect all plugs and pipes then get underneath and you should be able to see the bolts holding it on.I had a quick feel of mine and it feels like allen bolts.I may be wrong so please dont hold me to it
