Title: Speed Awareness Courses
Post by: Dean_W on 24 May 2012, 10:27
I got flashed doing 36 in a 30 by a fixed camera.  Recieved the notification through the post and it basically says take the points and fine, or go to court.

I've been driving 9 years, and got (had  ) a clean licence.  Never been done for anything.

It doesn't say anything about the speed awareness course that people go on.  Can i get put on this?  How do i go about it?  Or, am i buggered and just have to take the points?

Thanks

if it doesn't offer you the option then i'm not sure. I got done recently exactly the same circumstances as you. I think you first have to accept liability and it's possible that the following letter offers you the awareness course.

When you send back the form to say who was driving there is usually a box to tick to say if offered you would do it, i only know becaue my mrs got one the other day. Once you have sent the form back you will then get a letter if they decide to offer it to you.

Gutted Deano!

I don't know if how the speed awareness courses work. First time I got caught, police man with camera, I had to take the points. 2nd time I had to take the points, but 3rd time I got offered the course. I'm guessing it must have something to do with the area/constabulary you get caught in...

IIRC speed awareness courses are for people caught speeding within 10% of the limit?
So if you do 33 in a 30, you can get away with it, but over that you're either knowingly speeding or driving carelessly so get the points and a fine.

This tells you everything you need to know. I guess its norfolk where you got caught.

http://norfolk-safety-camera.org.uk/index.php?page=speedaware

"The new Norfolk Speed Awareness course has been made more widely available to offences detected from the 1st June 2008 by offering it to those drivers / riders who have exceeded the limit in all speed zones and up to the threshold of 10%+9 (i.e. up to 42mph in a 30mph zone etc)(effective from 1st December 2010)."

"Q.  How will I know if I am eligible to attend a Speed Awareness Course?
A.  After admitting to the offence, if you are eligible you will receive a letter from Norfolk County Council inviting you to attend a Speed Awareness Course.  You will have the option to accept this offer or decline."

98 on the M4 by Thames Valley Police.

Had I been doing 96 (or below) the copper would have been able to issue a fixed penalty. Over 96 and he has no choice - it goes to court. (That's what he said anyway).

Obviously no offer of a course... I got 5 points and a £225 fine.

Laser cameras do work at night by the way...

Could been worse if you had been 2 miles an hour faster 5 points is better than a ban

58 in a 50 on the A149 in Norfolk- caught by a mobile camera which was in an average speed check zone (go figure!) If you're in Norfolk- they are held at UEA, lasts about 4 hours.

Funniest thing that morning was a blond girl who was late- she said she had to speed to get there, and she was being serious about that like it's an OK thing to do :)

Clean licence

I can't read nor write but I can understand these markings:

And why I should abide by them

Common sense applies yes, however we're not all squeaky-clean are we?

Are be very surprised if anyone got the option to take the course if it was your first offence, i think the awareness course is for repeat offenders...

Got caught by a fixed camera doing 38 in a 30 and got the fixed penalty notice with know option of course...it was back when I was 17 on a moped  and yes that was going down a slight hill

It's clean now and staying that way!

Mine was first and only offence

The course taught me 1 thing: slow down at known camera sites.

I got done 36 in a 30 and was offered the course in the letter. Just had to confirm I wanted toe course and not the points.

P1ssed off that I got caught at 36 in a country lane speeding up to the national speed limit (camera guy was next to the national limit sign)

The course was an eye opener.

The course can be offered after more than just one instance of speeding but for you to be offered it more than once there has to be at least 3 years since the last course or conviction.

86 in a 60, no option for the course but 3 points and £60 fine, will be able to remove them next year though.

I don't think all policing areas offer the course, Devon and Cornwall don't but Somerset does.

Yeah when I got mine through Avon and Somerset, I had to travel up to the nearest place that did it which was Taunton.

I was caught along the Yeovil to Dorchester road, my own fault But I've leant my lesson. Been a good boy since.

You think so? I learnt a few things, and made of aware of others. The course made me drive with less haste for about a day...Call me stupid or ignorant. I don't feel a 3 hour lecture will change anyone driving habits.
