Mine used to do the same, soon after it started leaking, and the only solution was a new steering rack.

It had a winey sound from steering column but now it's a full on loud creak you can feel in your feet. Is a new rack a big job?

You need to drop subframe to do it. It is a pretty big job.

Really? Fcuk. It just suddenly started doing it. It's propper loud inside the car from steering column and can feel it on you feet on the floor. Fluid level is fine. Power steering pump sounds like its working hard aswell but defo a loud sound coming from under the car.

You could try tightening down the nuts that hold it in place, you might be lucky and it's just loosened up over the years but it does sound like the same problem I had.

All mk3 power steering racks are the same. No idea how much a garage would charge sorry.

So what would be the cause of the creaking in the steering rack? And what will happen when I FINALY goes? Will it just seize up?

Mine was just age I think, it was leaking as well. And no idea what happens next, I changed mine pretty soon afterwards.

its a strange one really as i got my son to sit in the car wile engine running and keep turning steering all the way left and right wile i had my head in the engine bay and i could not hear it but then when i sat in the drivers seat i could really hear it and feel it. but then when i drove my car into my garage and did it i could hear it echoing inside the garage. just odd that i could not hear it with head down near it in engine bay  :undecided:

well its gona be a wile till i can afford to change this so just hope it dont go on me wile driving

I reckon you could do it mate :)

Take off the ball joints and the track rod ends, engine mounts loosened, stand on the engine and lower it down.

OR just lower the engine down too. It's not too bad of a job IMO, on my 1.6 I dropped the subframe with the engine on it and didn't disconnnect anything at all!

Ah that's exactly the same as mine. It's all in the passenger foot well where the sound is and I did use an impact gun to put mine together. So I should take off the top nut the slacken the nut on top of the bearing slitely?

Ok just went to my garage to loosen the top mount nuts and it don't seem to be doing it. Not sure if it's coz it's cool now. But I have loosened them both off then done them up again with just one knock of the impact gun instead of a few. It's seems fine now now. But won't no for sure till I drive it for abit and get it all up to temp.

ok it has started up again as soon as the car gets up to temp.
so i took off the top mount nuts on both sides today and its still doing it. but i have noticed the power steering pump is propper whining aswell.
just had a look at the auxilary belts and they as old and flakey so hoping it may just need new belts and i will change the power steering fluid.

how do i get the old fluid out to put new stuff in?
