hi all. i changed the sump on my 1.8t golf yesterday. the oil pipe was taken off and there was no sign of any gasket.
i put it all back together. now im getting a little leak. i have tightened it as much as i dare and its still dropping a little. maybe a small drop a minute.
its not a big deal but a new sump i expect no leaks. has anyone used a instant gasket on this part. i would have thought how tight it is it wouldnt leak :(

Use a little instant gasket or make a gasket from gasket paper.

I done this too!! It's still on the old sump stuck flush!! Get the stanly blade on it to get it off and reuse!!!
-
there was no gasket on mine. it was metal to metal.
i will drop the oil out and put some instant gasket on.
hopefully this will finally sort it its leaking more now haha

yeah there should be a gasket think i paid 1 or 2 quid from work for mine, it looks like theres no gasket but there will be. i used instant gasket but it still leaked so just fitted a gasket and its been ok now for 5 month or so :) also if you do becarfull dont put loads of sealant on dont want it drying and then going into the sump then into pick up pipe

im kinda annoyed now. i dropped the oil out again. refitted and put gasket on. smeared a small bit of instant gasket and tightened it up.
its still leaking. it looks to me in the middle between the 2 bolts its not pulling in flush. i cant tighten it anymore in case i thread the bolts. any ideas?

did you put paper gasket aswell as instant??
-
it was a thin metal gasket that was on the old sump. i only smeared a small amount of instant gasket. it just seems in the middle theres a slight gap (maybe reflections from the gasket) ill try and take a picture. other then this the cars running fine so would like to sort this once and for all

f**king hell in the garage it goes. one of the oil return bolts has snapped clean off. i wish i had some luck with this car, hopefully the garage sort it as i need a ramp

ending up buying a second sump. the 2 hidden bolts were easy now ive done it a few times :)
now all good finally with no leaks. for some reason all the sump nuts have a groove at the end and they dont seal great. i managed to get one without the groove and no small leaks
