Sell it and buy a GTI, so much needs changing it is not worth thinking about.

8v will be engine, loom, ECU. Loom goes straight in the fuse box. Then clocks and immob box, fuel pump gearbox.

Not too hard if you just drop the subframe, change the looms and clocks and box.

Can do it with dash in. Then stalks as well.

Actually, for 8v:

- Engine, gearbox and all parts associated such as starter, alternator, clutch etc
- Slam panel and radiator
- ECU
- Engine Loom
- Clocks, stalks and associated looms
- Immob box and loom
- Fuel pump

Think that's it.

For 16v add on clutch cylinder, brake resovoir & piping, and possible pedal box if yours is an early one.

Your also going to need to uprate the brakes and it might be worth checking insurance first.

Insurance is cheaper than on a gti by nearly 500 I'll keep a open mind for now as was just an idea for now

Yes but after you declare it insurance will probably be more given the nature of engine conversions

best off buying a GTi.

Actually quite possibly not.  Insurance companies tend to take an average of the insurance group, so it may well be lower than a standard GTI.

Hardly worth the effort though.

Yeah just sell it and by a gti. Got my green one for £450 so there are decent cheapies out there.

Interesting. So a GTI engine e.g. ABF in what was once a non-GTI could be cheaper to insure?

it depends on the insurance company but its possible, my 1.8t conversion is cheaper for me to insure than both the 8v gti that it used to be and also a mk4 1.8t. not by much though its not exactly an economical thing to do

All depends on the insurance company but specialist can be cheaper than a big name company, mine was a lot cheaper with Brentacre against Swinton

I can see why someone would want to do this rather then just "buy a gti". As my 1.6 is as good as rust free and I've got it pritty much how I want it, the only thing it's lacking is power, so I bort a gti, loved the engine but other then didn't really like it at all, so now im gunna be back in the 1.6. Although it would be a bit of work to do the conversion I wouldnt mind putting an abf init.

I reckon with two people you'd have an ABF running in a late MK3 (late cause pedal box).

Then the next day you'd have it finished.

How can you tell if your mk3 is an early or late model? As mine is a let 95 model but had square indicators

they class it as a modification.. it will go up more.. id deffo check first

we have had issues, not quite the same but..

direct line and about 15 other companies wouldn't insure my dads car no longer because we converted it to AUQ (180 BHP mk4 Annie engine and box)) from 2.0 8v

the only company that would touch it was Adrian flux, however the price was same as he was paying on the 2.0 engine

I also had the same problem when i did mine, as did my mate whoc mk4 we converted from 1.8 non turbo to 1.8T

will be late, they have bigger brakes (usually - not always)

biggest tell tale is the clocks tho, show me a pic of your clocks and ill tell u

also where is the diagnostic port ?
