Title: The time has come...
Post by: PenguinGTI on 21 May 2012, 15:42
Well folks the time has come for me to depart from GTI ownership.

I signed the papers today for the Golf to be traded in and tomorrow it will be driven for the last time by myself.

Over the 63,000 miles that I've covered in it there have been many great moments. The GTI really has been the best car that I've ever owned. It's proven to be a loyal and faithful companion throughout any motoring trial or experience - taking folks to the airport, cruising around Europe or thrashing around the Nurburgring. Although it was to the Mk5 which he was referring, Jeremy Clarkson was spot on when he described the GTI as "all things to all men".

Anyway I just wanted to share that I've really enjoyed my time of GTI ownership and also my time as part of this forum. There have been some characters but it's all been really enjoyable.

I'll leave you with my favourite photo of my Mk6 GTI. It was taken at the start of the year up by Loch Lomond.

Thank you folks for the kind replies. I'll still hang around for a while and help anyone if I can.

I've gone back to MINIs. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea but I've really missed driving them.

I Like mini's, good choice. Problem is there made by BMW so crap in the snow. What will you use when it snows?

I like the mini's - still look fresh today and the JCW ones look  I looked at one or two when choosing the GTD but they just weren't practical for me with two young boys hence me having a five door now

We still need a pic or two

Sorry to see you move on Penguin. Your last picture looks great although it probably would look better without the crooked neck
What type of mini are you looking at?
Interestingly I also had a look at minis as I really like them but since looking I've since looked at every one on the road and every single one has been driven by a female so that's put me off  :embarassed:

Nick and I hated the countryman but couldn't help but admire the build quality and the way they are put together when we had one in work.

I'm a mini fan - always have been.

Yep but the problem with BMWs is that they are RWD (and all have stupidly large wheels with low profile tyres) whereas the MINI is FWD and has a handbrake  My previous MINI was better in the snow than my GTI (the DSG seems to have an issue pulling away smooth enough to maintain traction I found).

It's a new MINI. Factory ordered on Monday, should be here on the 2 July (if not sooner).

It's going to be Lightning Blue and I've specified Sat-Nav, Sunroof and the Luggage Pack (yes that means a luggage net ) The Golf is now away so it's just a case of waiting for the new car to arrive. Thankfully I don't really need a car right now as I'm mainly out the back enjoying the lovely weather.

I'll stick up a pic or two once I get it but I appreciate that this is a GTI forum so I'll not put up too much blasphemous material .

I wouldn't worry about posting pics mate, there's more Aldi and vauxhall owners on here than anything else these days!

Is it a Cooper S or a JCW you've had?

Sorry to see you go and hope you enjoy the Mini. I really like them, never had one as I need a bigger car with 5 doors (with having children). There is only one thing wrong with Mini's there are just too many of them. For example I was on the school run this week and there were at least 15 Mini's at the school with half being convertibles, but only two GTI's

that sums my road up rather well given the number of people who work at Mini and take full advantage of their car scheme

Yep, Cooper S JCW I'm going for.

Brilliant cars. Would have loved to own one but unfortunately I do need more than two seats

Ok, simplest way is that there's two models. The R53 (Supercharged) and the R56 (turbocharged).

MINI One 1.4 (1.6 in the R53) 90-100bhp
MINI Cooper = 1.6 NA 130bhp (approx.)
MINI Cooper S = 1.6 turbo = 163-184bhp (depending on model and revision)
MINI JCW = 1.6 turbo (stronger engine block) = 211bhp
MINI GP = stripped out JCW (R53 only) = 218bhp

HTH.

I remember test driving a very late R53 JCW with the LSD and the shorter gearing the later cars had...and it was epic fun.
A real licence loser.

MINI2 seems to be the biggest, but I've not really been on it. There's also NorthernMINI and NewMINIScotland, the latter of which I'm on.
