Title: engine pinking at speed + vibrations
Post by: Mr Blue on 08 June 2005, 23:54
My engine 'pinks' at about 50mph and also 80 mph and is quite scarey. feels like the whole front end is gonna fall off!

Kind of feels like the engine mount is gone/misfire. just cuts on and off.

another thing.

the dash starts to shake doing 60 and 100mph. one of my CV joins 'clicks' so i recon its to do with that.
wheels have been ballanced and the tracking is spot on.

She's gonna blow!!!!!
have you checked your timing and your HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor, air filter clean? might also be worth getting a krypton tune?

as for the shaking dash check your wheel bearings and suspension bushes, track rod ends, CV joints etc  as these can cause wobbling at speed. Does it come through the steering wheel or not because we changed nearly the entire front end on a t25 syncro only to find a rear wheel bearing was on it's way out very similar sounding problems. worth a try..

recently replaced rear wheel barings. i cant feel any vibration on the steering wheel. the car just shakes like a b!tch
Cleaned the dizzy and rotor before i set off this morning. air filter is new.
Gonna check the timing tomorrow. Whats a kyrpton tune? sounds kinda fancy

Blue have you lost a balancing weight off one of the rear wheels???
Steering wouldn't shake but an unbalanced rear wheel can make a car vibrate like b@ggery

Krypton tune is just like a home tune they check fuel mixture, ht leads, spark plugs, coil, dizzy all on fancy computers. Did mine a couple of weeks ago and found out I had a dodgy connection on my coil and a co level of 8.5 instead of 2!!! have you checked your engine mounts also because if the engines flapping about that could cause some fair old rattling!

The pinking you describe could be an electrical fault check the HT leads. Is it quite a violent misfire or jolting / shuddering feel?
