Title: squealing noise driving me mad,, sounds like a charger tho!!!!
Post by: monzablue16v on 08 June 2005, 22:11
Another I'll have to fix that.... problem.

when idling or driveing there is a squealing/whistling noise which sounds to be coming from the fanbelt (no pas) it sounds just like a g60 is bolted on to it!
so far I have...
Changed my alternator put a 90 amper on whilst I was at it! and got it rebuilt.
Changed my waterpump and pulley and bolts
changed the belt 3 times for different ones

Still squealing!

the only thing i can think of is a "replacement" pipe put on by a previous owner is leaking but it's the breather pipe on the side of the airbox so can't see that making it and another one of VW's £60+ bit's of rubber hence the 22mm copper pipe put on at some point!.

Any ideas guys n gals???

Did you replace the tensioner at any time? If not get it done sharpish as if left long enough they sieze up and snap the belt.

spray some WD40 around the squeeking area (have to do that to mine sometimes) the noise goes away

Is you alternator belt on too tight?

timing belt tensioner was done also sorry forgot to mention that! had the timing belt and new tensioner fitted by a vw specialists, belt squealed before pretty sure it is fanbelt related?

I put wd40 on the belt not loads but as soon as the engine warmed up the squeal returned wd must have evaporated!! tried some belt slip spray too that did the same thing.
Belt is tight but I wouldn't say too tight, started to get the classic fan belt squeal 1st thing on a morning!

What is the correct belt for an 88 1.8 KR 16v with a 90 amp alternator and no power steering anybody know?
thanks

mate you dont want to be putting any fluids on any belts. the belts are rubber for a reason, its so that they grip in the "v" pullys and transfer drive from one pully to another. the only things that should be able to make squeeky noises is the cam belt tensioner pully and the alternator belt. if you have a new cam belt pully that should be ok. take your alternator belt off and see if the rubber has glazed over on the edges where it contacts with the "v" groove on the pullys. it could be that the belt is glazed from slipping previously and even though the belt is tight it will still slip as the belt wont grip in the "v" grooves on the pullys. just give the belt a rub with some sand paper to remove any glazing and refit. make sure the belt is really tight. it can be a pain to set the belt if the adjuster nut is all chewed up on the bracket. if that dont work check you have no plastic belt covers that could be rubbing on the belts. its got to be some thing silly these things usally are

Have you checked the alternator pulley for wear?.....I have found in the past that sometimes they wear so much that the pulley ends up a 'U' shape rather rather tan the desired 'V' shape that they start of as.  The belt then will start slipping on the sides which become pollished due to the slipping which in turn causes the squeal ( despite the belt being tight)

Hope this is of some help

Me too - I got the same squealing problem. Changed all belts and cam belt tensioner (pas too). Checked, double checked and treble checked all the belt tensions, and they're spot on with what I've read on here / bently / haynes. Squealing started 'bout a week or so after I done all this. Worried that it might be the tensioner - it's new, and came from gsf. Anyone had any problems with these before?
Cheers. :undecided:

Further to the above post, I got the noise checked out by a mechanic who said 'nowt to worry about - they all do that when you change the cam belt - it's just bedding in' - I'm a born worrier, and not convinced. Sure I read somewhere on here that gsf tensioners are crap, and fall apart. Anyone ?

Sounds to me that your cambelt is too tight.

I've had no experience of these from GSF but I'd personally always go to VAG for these kind of parts, changed my tensioner recently and it was about £25 + VAT. By the way, when mine sounded like a fan belt squeak it was actually the tensioner, had the belt and tensioner changed and it fixed the prob.

Timing belts in my experience ( if adjusted correctly when fitted ) shouldn't make any noise .
Was it a decent quality belt eg Genuine VAG or Gates (O.E.)?
There are other makes out there that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole to the point that If one of my customers asks me to fit one of those cheaper ones (that have as much strength as an elastic band) I refuse and advise them to get a quality one
I personally don't believe in economizing on something as crucial as a timing belt .False economy IMO
