Title: Shiny!
Post by: Ess_Three on 19 May 2012, 14:34
Decided to treat the Mk6 to a spot of TLC...

Wet sanded the touched in stonechips with 4000 grit paper, broke out the Megs G220 polishing machine...got bored, so thought I'd give rotary polishing a go...first attempt with a Makita Rotary so taking it easy with that!

Got all the swirls etc out, gave it 3 coats of Menzerna FMJ, 3 coats of Raceglaze Series 55 carnauba wax, and a final wipe down with Jeffs Carnauba Jett.

Boredom is a terrible thing, you know?

No more pics as yet because I've only done the A pillars forward

I can do the roof, tailgate and rear bumper in the garage, then I'll get it onto the drive for the sides.
I'll get some pics them.
Maybe later on next week.

Good work       ... and a very wet looking finish

Look forward to seeing the whole car when finished

As James says, red does look good when all polished  ..... swirl free and waxed up

Now that *IS* shiny!
I wouldn't dare touch the paintwork with any abrasive paper, I know I'd ruin it, even tho there's a patch or two of other peoples kind efforts to 'polish' a panel or two with their supermarket trollys... I'll have to look into getting them done professionally eventually

And just *how* many overhead lights do you have in your garage?

As long as you take things easy, measure the paint depth and start with the mildest paper/pads/compounds you can get away with, and have the right machines to recover it, it's fine to wet sand.
Its like everything...the more you do it, the more confident you become.

That's not so say that looking at a bonnet with a few dozen completely matt sections wasn't slightly worrying.

Further progress: roof and rear spoiler now done.
Again, a spot of wet sending on stonechips on the leading edge of the roof where it meets the front screen, them polished and coated just like the bonnet.

Hardly any swirls or scuffs on the roof though, so a fairly easy job.

Sides, tailgate lower and rear bumper to do...but they aren't too bad.
A few tar spots and minor scuffs at worst.

Some more pics:

Tailgate and rear bumper done - lots of contaminents on both, so it was a swine of a job involving clay bar, then two grades of compound on the Megs G220 DA polisher...but came up well.

Sides taped up ready for machine polishing with the Makita rotary.

All done...a few of the finished result:

The spoots?

As soon as I can lever arm my mate into taking a break from messing about with his Mk5 GTI and coming to give me a hand, I'll be fitting the Milltek system that's sitting in my garage, along with some 100mm VWR black tips:

All done now...

Wheels off, tar spots removed, machine polished and given 3 x coats of Poorboys wheel sealant.
I'm surprised powder coat responds so well to being machine polished...but it did.

No sadly I have had that for the last 20 years cleaning my cars, sadly living in a cul de sac you get the same comments week in week out, they mean well but as you say really annoying.

Will probably pay for a full paint correction detail at some point, haven't the time or skill to do it myself sadly.
