Today I went and had my car checked with vag com, and the 17963 code came up charge pressure maximum limit exceeded. The mechanic did the readings and blocks and said the boost was peeking at 21 psi and holding at about 16 - 18 (I think), and he said there was no boost leeks, and therefore he thought the problem with the lack of full power was to do with the stock intercooler not being able to handle the high boost settings that were done on the remap, which would make the car go into safety mode so it didn't over heat, he seemed to think the boost levels were nearing the stage 2 performance, and couldn't believe it when I said it was down on power, and he suggested I get a new FMIC. I phoned up R-tech who did the remap and they told me that they have a mk4 golf like mine running at 220 bhp on the stock intercooler.
So was I just being tried to be sold a new intercooler? any other suggestions that I could try to get the power back
-
take it to r-tech let them look at it as im sure they will find your prob,an wont try rip u off
-
Mine's R-Tech stage 1 and peaks and holds exactly the same amount of boost with no problem's at all. I'm still using the OEM SMIC.

I live about 180 miles away and R-Tech said they could possibly need it for a few days. Which I can't do at all.

Yes, according to R-tech there should be no problem with the OEM SMIC working on their stage 1 remap. The intercooler the mechanic suggested I buy is a THS performance FMIC at £495 plus £200 to fit it

21 psi is stage 2 figures that price for the THS Intercooler is well expensive considering I only
Paid 480 fitted from R-Tech for the same cooler with the oem side mount u shouldn't notice any
Power issues unless ur ragging it and it's suffering from heatsoak

I thought it sounded expensive! I think i will stick with my OEM one then, as I don't intend on going to stage 2 with this car
No, I am not ragging it at all, but the mechanic did think it could be suffering from heatsoak

where did you go, qwick-fit??

LOL. I went to a VAG specialist who also do revo remaps!!
He also new I put a new N75 on it, would that sho up on the Vag-com then?
-
i can only think there is a split in one of the pipes that is going to the n75 valve, check all these.....
have you changed/checked the pipe that connects to the charge pipe n goes to the n75? think it is hiding in a heat shield.... check all 3 of these anyway!!!
-
Running 21psi u should really at least uprate the standard side mount they may say its ok but u will notice a difference over the standard 1

Thanks I will have a look in a min
I just received through the post today the creation motor sport 5 piece silicone turbo boost hose kit, so i am going to fit it all, I think the pipes you are on about are some of those in this kit..maybe, is that right?
-
yeah one of them is, the one on top of the charge pipe to n75.
have fun doung the ic to tb as its a bumper off job!!!
also the turbo to charge pipe is TIIIIIGHT!!!!! (and once you have done this one let me know if there is a different sound when she boosts)
-
THS intercoolers retail at £495...
£200 to fit it is a bit extreme though, I'd do it for half that

TIIIIIIGHT ! more like TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHTTTTT 2 bloody hours I was messing around with that one!
I am not to sure about taking off the bumper, is it easy? I will do the pancake pipe one tomorrow
-
Those pipes have made it a lot better (the ones from the charge pipe to the diverter valve, the turbo and the N75 valve). There was a tiny hair line split on the one that went to the N75 valve, and now the car almost feels normal again, well it did earlier when I took my 10 yr old son out and over took a mk4 2 ltr gti golf, and left it way behind me  it put a massive grin on mine and my son's face

You know!! Told ya
Yeah don't be worries it's easy, will take less time that the other one haha
http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/122899/830545.aspx
Do this one tomorrow too, and when the bumper is off take the intercooler off and give it a clean out (either with carb cleaner or petrol) as there will be oil in it!!!
Let us know how you get on mate

Thanks for the link  I am still unsure about trying it yet, I will weigh it up later with the weather too  but I will definitely replace the small pipe from the pancake pipe as I can do this buy just taking the wheel off, or if I did take the bumper off, could I do the pancake pipe without taking the wheel off?

I done it  I feel well pleased that I managed to do it, I cleaned the intercooler with some carb cleaner, a bit messey. It was a bit of a pain getting the intercooler lined up again, but managed it after a bit of pulling and pushing.
The car is most definitely better and the turbo now sounds like a suppercharger LOL. I think I will put the old N75 back on tomorrow, because I put a new J - N75 on the other day, and I think that could of been the cause for the 17963 code that came up.
-
Nice one!! Glad you got it all done mate, I had to trim that one down for it to fit!!
Don't it make a difference!!?!

Yes it does seem to make a hell of a difference from those two OEM pipes!! Both Jubilee clips on the pancake to intercooler pipe would not tighten up properly, so I replaced them too, but I still need to get another two clips as the ones I used are not the best, but I had to make do with what I had spare.

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would just add on to this, because the puzzlement continues!!
After getting the car back to a remapped status by changing the 5- piece turbo hoses, it has since again lost the power a bit...no codes on the engine, so I am presuming there is another leak somewhere, I tightened every hose up that I changed, I even re-tightened the pancake to intercooler hose with a brand new hose clip that is done up tight. as I did wobble the pancake pipe a bit to change the hose clip, is it possible that what ever pipe the pancake pipe is connected too (is it the turbo charge pipe?), could this of come loose, and how would I check it, do i need to take off the wheel and inside wheel arch?
any ones advice is greatly appreciated!

I Would hope so!!!!

You could have a leak on the pipe that comes off your Pancake pipe? Theres a stupid metal to metal connection with a C Clip holding it together, however ive had a leak their for ages and never had a boost problem.
With regards to 220bhp on a OEM intercooler, alls good, i dont have any problems what so ever.
-
Changed the oil breather pipe under the inlet manifold? Prone to splits

Ahh, ok thanks. How do I get to it, does the inside wheel arch have to be taken off, or do I need to get it on axle stands?

Yes mate, I changed the lower breather and upper breather with Creation Motor sport silcone pipes, and I change the suction jet pump, and the L shapped oil breather held on with a c clip all a few months ago

you need to get right under the car, its sorta between the engine and the drivers side footwell, if its leaking there will be loads a oily stuff round the joint. There might/should be ( i left mine off) a heat jacket round the bend where the join is.

OK, I just been and bought a 7 piece lifting kit from Halfords which includes two 2 ton fixed axle stands and jack and creeper ect, so i can have a look.
So there are two heat jackets on the charge pipe then, one near the turbo and another down under the engine?
-
Yes mate, follow the metal pipe that sitz just behind ur engine (from the top) to the left and down behind the engine, its the next join u wanna look at, as said tho, i dont get any issues from mine, i just know its leaking!!

nice one, I had a look and I can just about see the other heat cover (also noticed my heat cover that goes over the other pipe at the top is split underneath, I must of done this the other day when changing the oem pipe to a silicone one. Will have to get a new heat cover now)
I couldn't use the jacks as my drive is on a bit of a slope, so will borrow a friends level drive at the weekend. I did turn the wheel and notice through the gap alot of oil on the pipe. So it looks like I will have to be on the look out for something to fix it.
