Title: Feckin noisy bastard RAF choppers!
Post by: RandomJord on 16 May 2012, 22:32
Bit of a random problem and as there are some fly boys on here thought I'd gather opinion an advice!

My house seems to be on a flight path often used by RAF choppers, they come over lowish a lot of the time and that I don't mind, it's quite cool really, brings out the 6 year old in me.

Lately a few times they've come over Loooowww like real low so the house shakes and windows rattle like mad low. Every night this week they've come over like this late at night and every time it's woken my littleun up an scared the sh!t out of her!

I don't want to be all Victor Meldrew but surely there are rules about this? Can I complain?

Would be interesting to know because we've had some really low fly boys recently too  Also waking up our kids who'd just gone off to sleep after 2 hours of trying to get them settled !

Had typhoons flying low over High Wycombe the other week, to do with the olympics apparently.

Yes you can complain, whether they take any notice or not is another matter.

They do have rules about low level flying, and these should take into consideration the local community.  But if it's needed for training, your screwed.

That is basically the answer they will give you.

jord, ignore this

Can you complain? Short answer - NO!

as its completely incorrect

they have a low flying complaints procedure and forms

from the noise you are describing I am guessing they are Chinnocks.  therefore odiham.

if you need more assistance, then Pm me

Jay, benson doesnt have noisy helicopters, and the only ones that can fly that  low over wallingford to have such an effect will be the police or ambulance one.

Police low flying over my cul-de-sac? but I have such pleasant neighbours :lipsrsealed: Next time I'll look out the window to see who it is, I assumed it'd be the boys from Benson.

Chuffs got your back

I was going to say are these the chinooks? We always see them in 2's coming low over the workshop which is in all the farmland along the newbury road. Guess they're lining themselves up by your place and tracking along the downs and coming over us to get back to odiham.

Jord. Same.

Between about 11pm and Midnight, low enough to rattle the windows. Luckily my daughter seems to sleep the best that time of night so doesn't wake, but they are noisy!

Might fill a form in...

They went supersonic as a helicopter sent out a hijack signal and that is what they are there for... idiot

Does anyone remember that article about a guy in Scotland(?) who was constantly having all manner of stuff flying over his house, jets sweeping the valleys and popping up at full chat. Turns out that every helli, jet or whatever was locking on to his house every time they flew over as his place was the perfect target for under radar paractice   Her wasnt a happy bunny

I am unfortunate enough not to get them fly over my home but they fly over quite reguarly at work, I enjoy it I like to watch them also makes me feel quite proud of the amazing job these boys are signed up to do,

I dont have children of my own but have shared a house with some babies & i do understand that young children can be hard to settle,
May I suggest some form of tixylix or some childrens form of night nurse (if there is such a thing) that is not of the non drowsy formula...

After all seems harsh complaining about the boys that are training to protect us & our country,
(whats left thats worth protecting is beyond me but thats a different thread entirely)

Hope you find something that helps the littluns to sleep through it

Hmmm, Benson's merlins and pumas aren't really quiet when low. But yeah a Chinook is more of a chap chop thud sound.

Reminds me of the Welsh Farmer story years ago that got fed up with low level flights disturbing his cattle, so much so that he wrote 'piss off biggles' on the top of his house/in one of his fields (can't remember which). Needless to say every flyboy flew over to take a look!

My Grandma once wrote a letter of complaint to the Luftwaffe, because of the noise and disruption that they were bringing on the Eastend (Bermondsey) Which was strange, as my Grandad mostly slept through the Blitz

What would I have to do, to get a Spitfire fly over my house at low level, but on full chat, on a regular basis?

Thom

If it was a spitfire, or Vulcan like we had over the other week, or even anytime other than the middle of the night, I'd love it!

I still do love them going over In the day.

Oh.... And an update.... The parish council are Due to write a letter about the low night flights (agree) and about generally the fact that we're on a flight path (disagree)

Oh village life!

Jord come down london with a big trailer, I'll help you steal borrow the mobile SAM unit ontop of blackheath by shooters hill. I'm sure they won't mind, and I'm sure that the low fliers will $hit themselves when they see it in your garden

I thought the RAF police also come out to do an inquiry regarding low flight complaints etc?

Not too sure if it's been covered, but there is a 'Low Flying' complaints procedure, if you want I can dig out there number for you and PM it to you Jord, but in all honesty nothing will come of it, as in typical RAF fashion, they'll listen to the complaint, take it on board and then completely ignore it.

And good on the AOC for ignoring it too. It's for the defence of the country. If people don't like it, they could always move to somewhere like Bosnia.

So according to you lot I should have complained every time those really noisy big jet cargo planes used to fly right over my house?
Bearing in mind that those particular planes were carrying the coffins of dead servicemen and women.
