Title: engine fit mk3 8v
Post by: frank galager on 15 May 2012, 16:08
Hello, this is sort of an extention of a post a put up this morning http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=231322.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=231322.0) I found an engine an gearbox from a p reg 8v. Two questions.

1. Will it fit in my n reg? I shouldn't see why not.

2. if i hire an engine hoist, will in be overly difficult to just swap this engine (which has done 60k less than mine) with mine? I mean while im doing the gear box is it going to create a great deal more work?

Cheers.

Pretty easy to change the engine and box at the same time with a hoist as the entire front end comes off (Bumper, headlights, slam panel, radiator, crossmemeber etc) which allows you to pull it all out from the front and slide the replacement one in. Disconnect driveshafts, all the pipes, cables and wiring and your good to go. There are 2 different types of 8v engine (AGG & ADY)but if they are both late models they will likely both be an AGG engine code. I would say if your doing it on the ground it will be easier to just remove the whole lot rather than just the gearbox as its a bit of a faff.

Indeed...best bet is just take pics of everything your removing then follow the pics in reverse order when rebuilding. I dismantled my entire Mk3 this way. My pc has slowed down considerably with the amount of pictures on it.

LOL yeah i bet! It will be nice to bring the old beast back to life! Du think i'll need any other specialist tools other than a hoist?

Not that I can think of. The 12 driveshaft bolts require a torx headed spline socket to remove them from the gearbox.

N reg should be the same but make sure they are the same engine codes, early ones were very different.

Ok cool will do! Is there an obvious way of telling the difference?

Different inlet manifolds so aslong as they are exactly the same it will fit straight in.

Yours will / should be an AGG if the other is not then you have lots of difference, AGG is Bosch managment and the older engine is Simos, very different set ups.
