Sorry for all the post recently :lipsrsealed:
last few days its been hard to shift from 1st to 2nd and today twice it made a grinding noise shifting to second. seems ok when shifting down tho.
could it be a lose linkage if so how hard is that to tighten up and where would i be looking lol. :undecided: (reason i think this is because my gear knob seems to slightly twist round since a friend of mine seemed to think you take off the gear knob my unscrewing the whole damn gear stick.)
Thanks.

It's highly likely the shift linkages and bushes are worn. Repair kits aren't expensive and very worthwhile fitting. It's worth getting a linkage alignment tool as well from ebay when you fit them as it makes it so damn easy to get it all set up right the first time.
In regards of your friend twisting the entire gearstick, he may have damaged the lower plastic ball pivot. These do come in the kits but are the trickiest to install as it needs to be done from beneath with the exhaust out the way.

so think ill be wasting my money on a linkage tool? and just replace the gear box.. say just isn't it expensive?
-
My mechanic (who i trust) said your better off replacing it cus it will only get worse no matter what you do, but honestly thats just my experience, the guys on here may have had some joy but i found a ebay reconditioned box for £80 and fitting only cost £80 so it was worth it.
-
nice i remember when my 106 gear box gave up, the guy told me im best of going new and it be about £700 all in all... fook that sold the car lol.
-
Replacing the gearbox is all very well and good but if the linkages and bushes have never been replaced then they will need doing regardless as they're more than likely seen over 100k and 15 years of abuse.

112k today, ill take it in to get looked at ASAP.
